Polyommatus (Meleageria) daphnis (Denis & Schiffermüller 1775)

Common Name. Meleager’s Blue

Wingspan. 30.0-38.0 mm.

Description. A very distinctive blue. The scalloped hindwings are very distinctive in this species and the female upperside is unique and unmistakable. The male upperside is bright blue, the females is bordered with dark brown and tends to be more heavily marked on the underside. The male underside is pale grey with small markings. Both sexes are large.

Distribution. It flies across much of central eastern and south eastern Europe but it seems to be very local and uncommon. Absent from Mediterranean islands except Sicily. See map.

Biology. Flies June-July in a single brood from valley levels to 1400m or more. Calcareous soils and sunny, grassy slopes. Larval food plants include Astragalus spp., Thymus serpyllum etc.

Il complesso montuoso delle Madonie, in provincia di Palermo, costituisce uno degli ambienti di maggiore valore paesaggistico e naturalistico della Sicilia.
Dal novembre 1989 è stato perciò posto sotto tutela con l’istituzione dell’omonimo Parco naturale regionale.
La fauna entomologica di questo massiccio costituisce l’80% circa degli insetti noti per l’intera Sicilia e numerose sono le specie endemiche.
Nel caso dei lepidotteri diurni, 90 delle circa 100 specie note per l’isola vivono sulle Madonie.
Fra queste, le specie che si sono maggiormente differenziate rispetto agli individui delle altre popolazioni italiane, costituendo delle vere e proprie forme o razze locali, hanno due elementi in comune.
Il primo è quello di avere una dimensione leggermente inferiore, il secondo di avere una colorazione più chiara.
Maggiore gracilità, minori dimensioni e colori più tenui rispetto al tipo sono elementi comuni che caratterizzano le popolazioni di specie di provenienza settentrionale, adattatesi ad ambienti più secchi di quelli di origine.
Il Polyommatus daphnis rappresenta un esempio in tal senso.
La popolazione siciliana, presente solo sulle Madonie, è stata nominata pallidecolor ed è più piccola e più chiara della forma tipica, che vola in Italia settentrionale.
È sempre estremamente localizzata e non è mai abbondante. Si incontra lungo i pendii soleggiati e nelle radure montane, su suoli calcarei, fra i 1600 ed i 1900 m.

Fine capture of P: daphnis with excellent technical qualities and set in a pleasing composition with the white flower against an OOF natural bokeh BG. This is a species that I have never seen in the wild and it is nice to see the image of the habitat in the WS.
