This is one of four coyote pup I had the pleasure to watch grow up this summer. This young man still had to grow into his ears a bit. The coyote is one of the most adaptable animals around, they have been able to live in urban areas even with in New York city, also mountains and forests and then as you can see in the plains. I watched a documentary once that sais the more humans would try to eliminate them the bigger the litters they would have, thus trying to ensure thier presence. I believe they are starting to be seen for the benefits they are, for rodent control and scavenging of dead animals rather than a chicken stealing varment.

Hi Rick. Nice portrait of this "Coyote" Exelent sharpness and well framed. I like the pose looking to You Rick.
Luis52.

Ha! Hey Rick...I had cats for rodent control, but every year I would lose at least one cat and have to get another. Guess what got the cat?:_) You...'Twas the coyotes... We have dozens of them on our property for many years and they stole cats on a regular basis..as well as my closest neighbors sheep...I still see them as fascinating creatures, but never really as almost cute and cuddly as your picture. Very gentle one this was...

In Washington State they are listed in the guide as a year around pest as you allude to. Farmers, ranchers and the like are allowed to shoot them if they are 1> On their ranch.....2> Disturbing their cattle or sheep....It is supposed to be against the law to shoot them for any other reason....but that was the 3rd largest state with the least population of people and only 1 Fish and Game warden...so you can guess the rest...
Good story and very compassionate notes... It gives me pause to think..
