Adela reaumurella, a beautiful longhorn.

The longhorn moths, also known as fairy moths, have long antennae. They do not belong to just one family. There are various similar families. The most primitive of moths belong to these families: some even't don't have the well known 'butterfly' tongue, but are still eating pollen with an ordinary beak! Even though they are all quite small, they are striking animals indeed. Their long 'horns' and often beautifully metallic colours attract the attention immediately.
Adela reaumurella is a typical representative of this group. The males sometimes dance in large groups, just like mosquitoes do. As in all longhorn moths the antennae of the females are much shorter than the males. In this species there's another striking difference though: the males have lots of black hairs on the head and the first part of the body. The female is rather bold in comparison. She even has a few orange hairs on the face between the eyes, which are not visible on the male.

Eén ding zal duidelijk zijn: langsprietmotten hebben lange sprieten. Het is niet één nachtvlinderfamilie, maar een verzamelnaam voor een aantal langsprietige families. Tot de langsprietmotten behoren de primitiefste van alle vlinders: een heel klein aantal heeft zelfs geen roltong, maar nog een gewone bek, waarmee stuifmeel wordt gegeten. De meeste van deze vlinders zijn klein, maar wel opvallend en niet alleen door de soms extreem lange antennen. Veel soorten glanzen metalig en dansen in grote groepen, net als de dansmuggen. De rupsen leven van verdord en rottend blad op de grond. Net als bij de meeste langsprietmotten heeft het mannetje veel langere sprieten dan het vrouwtje. Maar bij deze soort is dat niet het enige verschil. Het mannetje is namelijk ook voorzien van tamelijk lange, zeer donkerzwarte haren op de kop en het voorlijf. Het vrouwtje heeft veel kortere haren en bovendien twee streepjes met oranje-achtige haren tussen de ogen.
