The rains came before the snows...It was the transitional time...which reminds me of the great conjunction from the movie Dark Crystal.

It was said in the "prophecy":
When single shines the triple sun,
What was sundered and undone
Shall be whole, the two made one,
By Gelfling hand, or else by none.

There is a mystique about the changing fall rains in the mountain wilderness. Unlike a summer storm, no cumulus clouds build in advance. It comes at fist as a slight breeze which picks up in speed slowly and then a wee bit of hail, and then it comes in full force with heavy hailstones as large as quarters. Winds as high as 70miles per hour sway 100 foot trees of large girth as if they were but toys. Because the storm was blowing in from the NW, I was able to sneak out the SE door under a small shelter of roof just long enough to grab a picture. You can see the rain already draining from the roof in the fore as if some sort of dust particles on the sensor, but not the case...and the run back inside, lest I damage my gear....which was at this time the Leica with the DC Vario lens.

Pump up the volume on the cast iron fire. Warm the pantry as well. Warm the whole house...for when this storm leaves and it did so, it left clear night skies and temperatures down to 0 degrees Celsius. It was on a morning after storm like this when I fell in the same location moving my 6th thoracic vertebrae by 30 percent. It was a time which changed my life..The wilderness had won in a nano second of unawares. I never regained my full strength and now have permanent nerve damage. Nature will do that to you...even if you are ready for all things...you are not.

Hi Bob,
What a joy to see this picture taken with your Leica!
It transmits to me the mood very well described in your notes.
It's very good the composition made and the way the silhouettes vanishes gradually when going to the back.
I want to wish you a very Happy New year to you and your great big family, you should be very proud of all them.
And hope to follow your work here and continue learning for all that you have to give us.
Take care and warm regards,
JM

But you are getting stronger every day and your spirit has grown stronger because of the effort you put into your physical recovery. Your story is inspirational.

A great composition - wonderful yet again. I run out of things to say when they're all good! ha ha

Hi Bob,
Your words speak volumes, your image the illustration. I wish you health, love and peace in the New Year. May you bless us with many more of your beautiful postings my friend. Rick

Hi Bob,
welcome to the brave new year of 2008 and may it bring you some joy and happiness and no extra hardship or nerve damage.I am more careful anymore as since I have become middle aged I do not heal so very fast anymore and the thought of going down on a fall from slipping on ice doesn't turn me on as your last paragraph suggests in your note.Your photo has a sullen and dark look and feel about it,a look that is made ever more so by the fact it is done in black&white. All looks good in this shot and the field of depth is great given the conditions at the time.A fine photo for TN and I hope to see many more from you this year. Tfs. Bob

hello bob,

Hi Bob,

A beautiful scene from a beautiful person. The silhouettes of the trees are wonderful. Your notes give so much more meaning to the picture. I, too, slipped on the ice, but did no permanent damage. I broke my hip and was out of commission for six months. I am not as brave as you. I vowed I would not spend one more winter in the northeast. That is how I ended up in Arizona.

Jane

Dear Bob
I hope you enjoy this time of the year :o)
Today was my birthday also .
Superb shot, Welldone.

Best wishes for 2008

Those trees have a very ominous feel to them Bob, it looks like they're trying to form a gang or something to me, huddling up like that. This is a shot with alot of mood and and deceptively huge depth too..i have stared at it for some time, enjoying it immensely.
All the best for the new year ahead.
Paul

Hi Bob,

Another class image, with perfect balance and tone. I love the sence of cold and wet that almost gusts out of the picture, and the b&w adds real drama to the image.

Thanks for sharing,

Mike

Bob,
Our bodies are "truely" most fragile.
And, a lot of people abuse this beautiful frame we call "body" by taking drugs etc:.
You, Bob, are true inpiration to us all; you are a FIGHTER.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Un paisaje maravillosamente captado que al ser en b/w da la impresión de ser más intensa.
Buen encuadre Bob, mis saludos and best wishes for you and your family in this New Year, greetings, JL.

Namastay Bob,

Hello Bob!

All the best for you in 2008!

What a fantastic post! Picture is great, with dark/misty mood. Black and white is perfect choice and Leica made it even more classical. And second part - your note - it is really good read!

Hi Bob,

Happy new year and wish you a great 2008 of photo

Hello Bob,
very nice and nostalgic shot
black and white add very well on this splendid composition
very well done
cheer,
friendly,
Pat

Dark & foreboding mood Bob, without a doubt..The image speaks to your unfortunate mishap.
Your fate might've been as one Dr. Atkins (atkins diet guru)..he slipped and fell on an icy sidewalk, lost his life. I compound fractured my left leg in a motorcycle vs car accident in my late teens. I have a slight limp now..I could be the one-legged man I suppose..
ANYWAY :)
Zero degrees eh..It got down into the mid-twenties last night, busted an outside faucet I left under pressure..da.
Well done mf,
Howard
