Campanula hercegovina Degen & Fiala

Campanula (Cam-pá-nu-la) is one of several genera of in the family Campanulaceae with the common name bellflower. It takes its name from their bell-shaped flowers, and campanula is Latin for "little bell".

The genus includes about 300 species and several subspecies, distributed across the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, with the highest diversity in the Mediterranean region east to the Caucasus.

The species include annual, biennial and perennial plants, and vary in habit from dwarf arctic and alpine species under 5 cm high, to large temperate grassland and woodland species growing to 2 m tall.

The leaves are alternate, sessile, and often vary in shape on a single plant, with larger, broader leaves at the base of the stem and smaller, narrower leaves higher up; the leaf margin may be either entire or serrated (sometimes both on the same plant). Many species contain white latex in the leaves and stems. The flowers are produced in panicles (sometimes solitary), and have a bell-shaped, five-lobed corolla, typically large (2-5 cm or more long), mostly blue to purple, sometimes white or pink. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous small seeds.

Campanula hercegovina is endemic species of Dinarides.
It grows to a height of 20 (-40) cm.
Species lives in rock cervices in mountain region from 1150 to 1500 m, but in canyons goes down to 240 m. It prefers shaded or partially shaded limestone (limestone-dolomite) vertical rocks/cliffs.

Hallo Dejan

This photo caught my eye because of its bright and beautiful purple colour. It is amazing how these flowers can grow and bloom so pretty between, the rocks without any sign of soil. The flowers surely looks a lot like bells and therefore deserves the name it is given The little bits of green leaves between the flowers rounds this picture of well. I found your notes on the subject interesting. Thanks for sharing this special flower, which is unknown to me.

Kind regards
Anna

Hi Dejan,
I have some around my home and they are beautiful flowers! This is good capture of a lovely bouquet. I have learned things that I didn't know about this specie. I would maybe have tried a little more contrast or color saturation but it is a question of personal taste :) Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Dejan,

I love the contrast here between the pale stone background and the vibrant purples and greeens of this Campanula. A very catching and efffective shot.

Hello Dejan

A beautiful composition of this clump of campanula. It appears so natural.
The way it grows right out of the rock illustrates it ability to grow in alpine conditions.
Wonderful colour saturation.
