I walked in the Pantanal on my own. Suddenly I saw this Spot-backed Puffbird (Nystalus maculatus). From a close distance he looked at me and I looked at him for certainly five minutes.

The Spot-backed Puffbird is a species of puffbird in the Bucconidae family. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and dry savanna.
It’s 18 cm. Yellow-brown band on upper breast. White underparts spotted black.
Voice tremulous tewre-tewtewre-tewtewre; distant birds alternate, sometimes for long periods.

Hallo Peter
An absolute beautiful bird and indeed like a powder brush. Very good detail and composition. I especially like the patterns that differ on the lower and upper body. The beak is in my mind has a lot similarity to the kingfisher'. I might be mistaken. I love the highlight in the eye and was also told that the glint in the eye is a big plus and adds appeal to a photo. I enjoyed looking at it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter.Strange looking bird has a very large bill for a small bird. you have captured a fine well deatil shot with natural colours. good light in the eye. well done TFS.

Here is a bird we do not have here in the US...and if we do...I never heard. I must go get my European book and look through..A fine bird clearly focused, well noted.. and appears to have a head twice as large in design as was meant for most birds..a rather unusual looking chap!

Hi Peter,
This beautiful bucconid species's great capture in great eye contact and lighting. COmposition, colors and focus very nice. Your notes informative and good.
thanks for sharing, best wishes
PS: thanks also your nice critique on my gecko shot.

Hello Peter,
Great capture of an unusual type of bird, on TN anyway and though there are several species of Puffbird I don't think any have been shown on TN before, including the Spot-backed. Nice sharpness, composition and lighting.

Hello Peter

WOW ! the Spot-backed Puffbird looks a very
beautiful bird, with its shy eye-contact on you,
with a wonderful light, the warm color tones of
the bird and foreground doing lovely contrast
against the background's sky's cold color tones, TFS
