[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I continue to introduce Turkish birds, whatever I can do. Actually, I planned to upload that of Vanellus spinosus (=Haplopterus spinosus) from Cyprus, but I changed my plan after James Paker (jamesp)’s post. He sent great shots of four species of cranes (1, 2, 3*, 4*) which two of them were firstly posted on TN nowadays. Cranes are 15 species from 4 genera all over the world and most of them are endangered [shots of 13 crane species are collaged the Theme: Gruiformes]. For this reason, I post photograph of a pair of parents with a young of another crane species, Grus grus Linnaeus, 1758 – Turna [TR], Crane [EN], writing about the order Gruiformes. Our group (Mustafa Sözen (spalaxtr), his two assistants and me) heard their sound just before dusk one days ago. In the morning of second day, we didn’t have enough time due to our scientific studies, but I claimed and we drove to near cite of cranes. Mustafa and me took their several photographs quickly, when they fed on grassland around the Lake Hafik (Sivas Prov.). Already they went away fast, flying after they observed us.
Although the birds are more careful and escape quickly in many places, since hunters are very common; ones in Hafik have more chances and farmers don’t disturb them as I mentioned previously.

Order: GRUIFORMES – Turnamsılar (Crane-like): sometimes (formerly) is called as Ralliformes. Current name of this order Gruiformes and is divided into two suborders: Ralli and Grui. This order is represented 14 species from its three families, listed below, in Turkiye. I posted photographs from two of these species previously (for see them click links on their scientific names).
Family 1: RALLIDAE – Suyelvesigiller, Saztavukları (Crakes and Rails)
*** Rallus aquaticus –Su Kılavuzu (Water Rail)
*** Porzana porzana –Benekli Suyelvesi (Spotted Crake)
*** Porzana parva –Bataklık Suyelvesi (Little Crake)
*** Porzana pusilla –Küçük Suyelvesi (Baillon's Crake)
*** Crex crex –Bıldırcınkılavuzu (Corncrake)
*** Gallinula chloropus –Sutavuğu, Saztavuğu (Moorhen)
*** Porphyrio porphyrio –Sazhorozu (Purple Gallinule)
*** Fulica atra –Sakarmeke (Coot)
Family 2: GRUIDAE – Turnagiller (Cranes)
*** Grus grus –Turna (Crane)
*** Grus leucogeranus –Ak Turna (Siberian Crane)
*** Anthropoides virgo –Telli Turna (Demoiselle Crane)
Family 3: OTIDAE – Toykuşugiller (Bustards)
*** Tetrax tetrax –Mezgeldek (Little Bustard)
*** Chlamydotis undulata –Yakalı Toy (Houbara Bustard)
*** Otis tarda –Toy (Great Bustard)

Finally, I’d like to dedicate this shot to dear friend James who made valuable contribution to introduce cranes, as I noted above.

Dear Ahmet

Thank you so much for the dedication - am very touched.
Believe it or not, this is one of the three species of crane I have not seen - the other two are the Hooping and Black necked.

Lovely composition and detail.

Thanks again

James :)

Neat shot of these cranes. I particularly like the positioning of the two on the right. TFS

Merhaba,

Merhaba Ahmet,
Excellent capture of a Crane family, both the parents and the young one looking good in this composition. Nice sharpness, colours and natural BG, that looks interesting in itself with the chickory and other flowers.
You did well to get close enough to take such a fine shot.
Nice dedication to James who has introduced some fine Cranes species on TN.
Thank for sharing this one my friend,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Ahmet,
We get the Cranes flying over our house as they arrive here in spring from Spain - I can't wait to hear them! This is a beautiful capture of the Crane family. Excellent sharpness and colours. I notice that they have more brown in their plumage than when we see them here. Interesting to see the young one too. Excellent composition!
Many thanks, Ulla
