This is my third and last upload on the Rough Cockle, Rudicardium tuberculatum, actually the same specimen shown in my last post, taken from a different aspect to demonstrate the double-teeth locking mechanism of the hinge, which could be seen in the middle-right of the frame, each half on one of the valves. When the live cockle closes the two valves, these teeth ensure that they are positively locked together and the numerous small teeth at the margins of the valves also interlock together, guaranteeing that the cockle would stay closed as long as it wishes. This mechanism would serve to retard the efforts of a starfish (an echinoderm) to open the closed valves to predate on the cockle. Who will win? Well, mostly the starfish, I'm afraid...
This macro-shot was performed via the diffused light of a "soft" photospot placed 2 ms to the right and a white carton passive reflector placed 20 cms to the left, a dark BG was used.

Hello Mehmet,
This is an excellent POV giving a fine view of the contours two halves of this Rough Cockle shell, both externally and internally and the structure of the hinge area where you have focused in is fascinating. I never knew they interlock in male and female parts to reduce lateral movement when closed.
Thanks once againg for sharing a fine image and teaching me something new!
Best wishes, Ivan

Wow, this is an equally fascinating side of the same shell, Mehmet!
You have now established yourself firmly as a shell specialist and have given us an insight into the world of these wonderful objects we did not know much about.
Bravo, and keep on doing it.
Regards.
Ram

Hello Mehmet,
I am learning from you, facts that I have never thought deeply about them. The combination of excellent photos of the molluscs, with an unique point of view, and high quality documentation, is broadens my knowledge a lot about this subject.
So, thank you very much for sharing.
Best regards,
Yedidia

Selamlar...

Hello Mehmet,
Very fine and interesting capture of this open Cockle. These shells are so smooth and beautiful inside too and they certainly seem to have a fascinating locking mechanism and strong muscles. It reminds me of the giant Clams we saw when snorkling on the Coral Reef. It would be really nasty to get ones toes stuck in one of those! :-)
Many thanks and regards, Ulla
