LEPIDOPTERA, LYCAENIDAE

Polyommatus (Meleageria) coridon (Poda, 1761)

Common English Name: Chalk-hill Blue

The Chalkhill Blue, as its name suggests, is restricted to chalk and limestone grassland where its foodplant Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comos) grows. Though still widespread in these habitats it is far less common than it once was because of the destruction of herb-rich calcareous grassland due to agricultural intensification.
It is also a warmth-loving butterfly, and is typically found on sheltered, south-facing hillsides.
The sexes are strongly dimorphic; the males being a sky blue, and the females being a chocolate brown. The males have bright blue wings with thin black-brown border and thin white fringe.
There is one brood each year.

Range: Across most of Europe eastwards to the Urals. It is missing from all but northern Spain, UK (except the southern chalk hills), Scandinavia and north Africa. Its range is stable through much of Europe but it has declined in several countries.

Like many other Lycaenid larvae, the Chalkhill Blue has a Newcomer's gland on the 7th segment. The secretions from this gland are highly attractive to ants (Lasius, Plagiolepis, Formica, Myrmica, Tetramorium) which are often found close by.

Hi Marcello
Very nice sharp image. Good DOF and unusual POV. Background is nice and OOF but I think that you could use gaussian bluring here and blur it a little bit more
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Ciao Marcello,
the wing surface structures are excellently presented.
You achieved pretty good sharpness on the entire left wings, the body and the antennae,
in spite of the difficult point of view.
Colours are just original!
Best wishes, Peter
