Here in the UK we have had a (relatively, for us!) cold snap over the past few days and have had some crisp icy mornings to contend with - my drive to work each day crosses nice open countryside and each day I've taken my camera gear hoping for some nice scenes, but alas so far it has been foggy or grey every time... until yesterday when the sun made the appearance I've been waiting for and lit the hoar frost beautifully.

I don't think this really does justice to the cold and the amount of lovely frost but nonetheless I hope you like it. I was drawn to the simple composition of the tree and the hedgerow/field lines, mirroring the sky.

Taken handheld stood on a freezing wall - am happier with the exposure results from my D80 here (centre-weighted, -0.7 exp compensation I think, lowest contrast setting) - and some minor level tweaks were done post-processing.

In hindsight I could have shot at F16 or even larger to get the ISO down / shutter speed up for a slightly clearer shot, but my hands were freezing and I didn't have too much time to think!!

Thanks for looking.

A nice and cold (as I believe),colors in layers are good, well done and tfs

Hey Doug,
I feel for you mate, its 33deg here today :) pretty good for hand held at -6 boy I don't miss that kind of weather, excellent details and I love the POV, really good use of the rule of thirds, congrats, Cheers Rick :)

Hello Doug,

Well balanced vertical perspective composition with meeting lines giving good perspective. The lone tree contrasting well with the horizon which is stunning agaisnt that handsome sky. I like this pleasant and not too contrasting image and very well framed shot here.

Brrrr! -6C is COLD!!
The freezing temperature is brought across superbly in this shot!
The frost, slight mist, blue tones, all excellent!
Fab vertical panorama composition with great use of the diagonal lines from the field and jet stream.
The tree has been placed expertly in the frame.
Very nice lighting, as you said, that lights the frost beautifully.
Great clarity and detail.
One for my favourites I think!

Cheers mate,

I really like this minimalist landscape Doug. I bet Niek will critique it soon. lt is similar to ones he has posted. I love the angles and the soft pastel colors of the large sky. The tree makes a great focal point. Nice work.

Hi Doug

A very beautiful simple composition here from you!
I was actually looking for something similar all winter long but just couldn't find the right place...
The frost is very well captured in the lower part of the scene and it contrast well with the clear blue sky above; the result is a very aesthetic and charming scene.
The lonely tree is very well used as a focal point for the perspective, while the frozen plants attract the attention well from the FG, too.
Wonderful work!

Bravo and TFS

PS: i think you may have a little dust spot on the left side - somewhere close to mid-height of the shot :)

Hi Doug,
A very beautiful winter scenery. I can really feel the coldness in this photo. The frozen landscape and the cold blue sky really gives me that winter feeling. I did do a WS on your photo to show what it would look like if you had used a grad ND. It will just give you that more white landscape.

Hi Doug
It is beautiful, minimalistic, perfectly exposed I dont know what to say Very good job
