This Black-Capped Kingfisher was tame enough to allow me to approach by car and take the photo (full frame) through the window with the lens on a bean bag. There was no way it could have been done walking near it with the rig on a tripod.

Exposure was a little difficult with the sun coming up from the back of the subject as can be seen from the reflective bill. It is a touch blown unfortunately.

Hello Phil,
The touch blown as you call it, is not distracting, I guess.
If you use the latest ACR, you could recover the details in these-what I call-hardly blown highlights. Furthermore I do like the backlight.
Effective and very beautiful background as well.
Good work!

Hi Phil,

very nice picture. The bird is captured sharp and with good details. i like the smooth brown background.
I would have stamped the small branch on the right hand side. Disturbes a little bit ;)

Hi Phil

If the bill bothers you, it can be "fixed" in Photoshop, but I don't think its too distracting.
Well composed with good sharpness and DOF. Good background.

Hi Phil!
this is really a great shot!
the background, light, composition everything is great! espacially the catchlight in the eye of a bird is mindblowing!
this black capped Kingfisher is one of my dream birds as i have not seen it closely before!
but this picture has now stimulated my dream again!
