LONDON PLANE tree - Planatus acerifolia

Today I went to Cornwall Park in Auckland, for a guided walk to learn more about the spectacular trees in the park. Cornwall Park is a park designed for the recreation and enjoyment of all the people of New Zealand. It has tree plantings dating back over the past 150 years. The park is famous for its landscape design and its wide variety of mature trees. It is centred on a volcanic cone, One Tree Hill, Maungakiekie, with many interesting geological features.

One of the first trees we stopped and looked at was the LONDON PLANE tree, (Planatus acerifolia), also known as the Europe Sycamore. This one was a very large tree and is many years old. They are often planted on city streets as shade trees because of their strong resistance to disease. Auckland has a few streets with these wonderful trees growing on either side of the road.

Closely related to the American Sycamore (Planatus occidentalis), the London Plane has bark so distinctive that once learned it is easily recognized. The large trunk and large limbs have smooth bark, greyish-green in colour. Yearly the outer bark flakes off in large blotches and exposes a creamy white younger bark, giving the tree the look of a patchwork quilt.

The fruit, a little ball dangling from a flexible stem, hangs on the tree all winter. In early spring the fruit ball breaks up and the small seeds are scattered widely by the wind.

NZ doesnít have many deciduous native trees, so it was good to see the lovely leaf shades in their various colours. The sky was so blue and the leaves so pretty and colourful I havenít saturated this photo at all; I just slightly sharpened it.

Wow, Janice! Great Blue Polish sky emigrated to NZ! Superb shot - incredible, autumn colours of leaves. Composition for first look seems slightly chaotic but I love it. Sharp, detailed. Excellent. Note is also very informative, I'm glad that you enjoyed your guided walk :-) I hope we'll see more!

Bautiful picture Janice. Very well composed and I especially like the blue sky behind the leaves. Fantastic colors. It's so strange that your are in the middle of automn now, whilst we are getting ready for summer. :) When I came to NZ in November it was getting cold in NL and when I arrived in NZ the weather was so nice. It was very strange ... :) Anyway, great picture. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

I love autumn Janice, and your lovely photo brings it to mind well. But that can wait, we haven't even really had spring yet.
Thank you for a beautiful composition with perfect colors, detail and sky!
