For today's posting I have moved to Chile, close to the borders with Bolivia. I called this posting 'Hight Altitude Colour' because of the amazing colours and bright light (caused by thin atmosphere). It was taken at about 5,000 metres asl.

The symetrical composition is deliberate - I thought the scene and colours had an abstract quality to them. It was like visiting another world.

The view is from Laguna Miscanti, looking towards the pass to Salar de Talar, where there were James' and Andean flamingos. On Laguna Miscanti were several pairs of Giant Coot.

The Altiplano (Spanish for high plain), where the Andes are at their widest, is the most extensive area of high plateau on earth outside of Tibet. It is an area of inland drainage lying in the central Andes, occupying parts of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. Its height averages about 3,300 meters (11,000 feet), somewhat less than that of Tibet. Unlike the Tibetan plateau, however, the Altiplano is dominated by the massive peaks of active volcanoes to the west. The Atacama Desert, the driest area on the whole planet, lies to the southwest of the Altiplano. In contrast, to the east lies the humid Amazon rainforest.

At the end of the Pleistocene epoch, the whole extent of the Altiplano was covered by a vast lake, Ballivián, the present remnants of which are Lake Titicaca, straddling the Peru/Bolivia border, and Poopó, a saline lake which extends south of Oruro, Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni, locally known as "Salar de Tunupa", as well as Salar de Coipasa are two large dry salt flats formed as well after the Altiplano paleolakes dried out.

Laguna Miscanti is a brackish water lake located in the altiplano of the Antofagasta Region, in northern Chile. Miñiques volcano and Cerro Miscanti tower over this lake. This heart-shaped lake has a deep blue color. The western shoreline of the lake is separated by less than 1 km from the drainage divide between the lake and the Salar de Atacama basins. Laguna Miscanti basin also has a common boundary with Salar de Talar basin.

A lava flow from an eruption of Miñiques separated Laguna Miscanti from Laguna Miñiques.

The lake is part of one of the seven sectors of Los Flamencos National Reserve.

Wowwww... James this is a perfect landscape shot with splendid, realy high altitude colours. Vivid colours made this shot more atractive. Well composed. Thanks for sharing this beauty friend.
My best regards,

A beautiful scene in symmetry and a fine azure lake high in the Andes James, a unique view my friend. Your notes, as usual, very satisfying. TFS and cheers,

Hello James,
Stunning landscape with vivid colours.
Good composition: the different layers give a nice effect on the deep of field.
Well done

James, the blue colour in this high altitude picture is mind-boggling. The sky blue is sky blue but the water blue is indigo.
Then the browns of the earth and the white on the shore of the lake make such a striking collage of colours.
The straight line contours too make this image a unique one.
Wow, what wonderful work you have been doing in the past!
Thanks and regards.

Very interesting composition and well chosen place to take this excellent photo from!

This is a work of art!An amazing shot! And the post shot work is very artistic!

Hi James,

I love the symmetry of this photograph. The shapes and colors are magnificent. The snow covered mountain is perfect in the center. Chile is on my list of places yet to see.

Bonjour James, great landscape and colors well saturated!! I like the different levels and the symmetric arrangement. Very well done, Didier.

Hello James,

You are right about the intense colours and the abstract appearance of the setting! This is just amazing! Great composition!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

interesting minimal and graphic composition, strong colours and good looking textures

wow....Reminds me a bit of Tahoe on a clear day...but Tahoe is only 6200 feet and I'm not sure how that works but I know I get a suntan much quicker...and this image is remarkable for its colours..I had not thought of things this way before seeing this!
PS Let me know how video turns out. I am doing another with more of the geology in it.

Hello James,
Very impressive and unique landscape with so much beautiful colouration contrast with each other!
a beautiful scene that we can not see often, much appreciated for the sharing and the notes
many thanks

Hello James,
Increible sencillez de composición, pero qué magnificencia, me encanta ese lugar del altiplano, llama la atención ver agua en el desierto más seco del mundo. Excelente trabajo

Hi James,

The colours are so bright and beautiful, it is a fantastic landscape once more! I love the simplicity and the composition, just some lines sliding in the frame yet composing a panorama to remember all your life. The thin atmosphere gives brilliant light like I never seen in my life, superbe! Thank you James,

Hello James

What a wonderful graphic shot.
The colour saturation is sublime.
Wonderfully composed ,this has the feel of poster art.
Excellent POV and DOF.
You are a true globetrotter.

You "thought" they were abstract did you now? Well, there isn't much "think" about it. It is definitely abstract. It is amazing. Was the water really that blue? It doesn't matter because it makes such a richly colored image. Love all those triangles...

Hello James,
What a beautiful and 'clean' capture of this fascinating landscape in lovely colours. I expect that's salt by the edge of the water? Does the salt also affect the colour of the water? Amazing that you'd find birds here.
Very interesting and a very fine composition.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi James,
You've been everywhere;-).
Thanks for another lesson in geography.
You are right, it looks a bit like another world.
Amazing colors.

Hello James,
What an amazing view. A landscape where you can loose your soul. It might escape to this mix of lines and colours which appear almost unreal. Bravo for this outstanding picture.
Have a nice day

Hi James

Sorry i haven't had any time for TN recently :( and i only found a small break today to attend to some of the superb posts i missed lately...

This is simple and sooo very beautiful!
Yes, it really does have a minimalistic abstract feeling for it, yet it still present something you could talk a lot about...how great is that?! :)
I like the symestrical composition here and i think it works great in such cases.
The fact that every place comes with it's own different color makes this look like modern or contemporary art painting...really beautiful!

Looking at the facts, i realise how high this actually is and how simple life actually is there...a place of serenity, of silence and of distance from all the daily routine. And that exactly what this photo inspires!
A beauty in all aspects!

Bravo and TFS

Incredible shot James! Great graphism, good composition and very well done exposure. Great colors too, thanks!

Very striking image James, what's not to like?
I think the the "deliberate" symmetry of your composition, combined with the dramatic colors, take this one out of this world..and beyond :)
Glad you are here at TN, you've brought a breath of fresh air to the "landscape" here.

Hi James,
Just stunning the layers of colour are amazing; love the angles the mountains have created, excellent POV, amazing detail, brilliant work mate, straight to my favorites’all the best Cheers Rick :)

love those colors and the abstract feel to this. definitely looks like another world

Hello James,
I do agree with you what you mentioned in the critique about Pangong Tso. It looks almost same. TFS.
Regards-Subhash Ranjan

Great shot! The colours and shapes look beautiful.

amazing graphic landscape, TFS Ori
