I found very difficult to take decent pictures of this little duck. Is not only restless an very fast diver but the colours of his feathers and his black eye on the black part of his had are clear visible only for a certain light direction.

The smallest diving duck in North America, the Bufflehead breeds in ponds and small lakes in Canada, and winters in much of the United States. It nests in tree cavities as well as in nest boxes.

Small diving duck.
Small gray bill.
White patch on side of head.

Size: 32-40 cm (13-16 in)
Wingspan: 55 cm (22 in)
Weight: 272-635 g (9.6-22.42 ounces)

Other Names
Petit Garrot (French)
Pato chillón chico (Spanish)

Hello Mario,
This is wonderful. I love these buffleheads. I find them totally adorable.
I don't see many of them my way, and when I have had a chance to take their pictures, I have found that to be a real challenge, what with the black and white contrasting so starkly. You had the perfect exposure, and you captured this beauty with great clarity of details. Congratulations.
TFS. : )

Hi Mario, I've never seen one of these guys before. Someday maybe. You've done a very good job with this one providing excellent detail on the duck, his plumage and even the drops of water on him. The colour detail is excellent with a very good transition of the different hues, seen on his head especially. Composition is good with a good placement and crop and I like the texture of that water. It looks wet.

Thanks, John

This is a great shot of a bufflehead. I've seen a lot of these birds but haven't seen that nice color on the head before. The image is perfectly exposed and very sharp.

Hello Mario,
Your diligence paid off handsomely. The colors and detail here are wonderful. Nice eyelight and the surrounding water is very pleasing.
Fine work. TFs Richard

Hello Mario !
This is one particular duck I have never seen before ! He is truly splendid, I love its colors, specially this big white marking on his head - looks unusual to me. You have captured him with excellent sharpness and details, nice natural colors, beautiful composition and POV, and the water makes a wonderful BG. Very well done !

~Great picture with a not so great (rather small :) )duck! It has beautiful colours and really pretty pattern on her back and head.I understand why it was so difficult to catch the light, but it sure deserves the effort!Superb composition! TFS~

Hi Mario. What a beautiful little creature. The colour palette is unassuming yet stunning in its effectiveness, especially the dramatic contrast between black and white and the metallic hues on the head.Great clarity and light. Regards. Klaudio.
