White Heron (Maori Name: Kotuku)

Scientific Name: Egretta alba modesta
Conservation Status: Endangered
Habitat: Lake edges, ponds and marshes throughout New Zealand, also in Australia.

Unique Features: The kotuku is recognised by its white feathers particularly the large, dorsal plumes, known as ospreys, which are only present during breeding season.

Social Behaviour: In August the adult birds arrive at the one breeding colony in Okarito in South Westland. They take part in elaborate courtship displays and after breeding the birds re-disperse throughout the country.

Diet: Kotuku will eat fish, frogs and water-living invertebrates from the marsh areas and can snap up small birds or mammals found near the water.

Reproduction: They will pair in spring and take turns to incubate the 2-5 pale blue eggs. Young hatch after 25 days and fledge at about 6 weeks of age.

Life Cycle: Kotuku can reach a considerable age in captivity, but due to their threatened status, life in the wild is much shorter.

Relatives: Kotuku are also found in Australia, and there are closely related subspecies worldwide.

Interesting Facts:

* There are only around 15 breeding pairs left in New Zealand, and their only breeding ground is at Okorito in South Westland.
* The kotuku was nearly wiped out in the 1870's as European settlers used the feathers for hats.

Breeding Programme: Wellington Zoo has the only breeding pair in captivity in New Zealand.

Environmental Conditions: The kotuku has always been one of New Zealand's rarest birds, although it is also found in India, China, Japan and Australia.

Hello Pam,
Great timing in the capture of this White Heron taking off. The almost frontal POV is superb and I like the composition of the stretched out wings with the cloudy part of the sky below and the head and neck reaching for the blue.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,

Nice shot! Beautiful posture of the bird.

Hello, Pam.
What an "angelic" pose you have captured.
Great POV of this heron in flight.
Really gives you pause to admire the fantastic wingspan.
Excellent focus and exposure on this white bird against the sky.
Masterful photo.
TFS. : )

Dear Pam,
Wow this is just an amazing shot, the shear elegance of flight, what an awesome picture, superb detail and the lighting on the wing edge is just beautiful, the background colour going from grey though to blue just makes this even more spectacular, wonderful image, all the best Cheers Rick :)

Hello Pam,

Beautiful inflight shot. I think I'm standing on the beginning of the runway (-: Razorsharp picture with fine details. Natural colors. Nice POV, DOF and BG. i like the compo very much. The biggest part of white Heron has the clouds as BG and the last part has blue sky as BG. Very special. Regards and TFS BOB

Hi Pam,
This shot rocks. Perfect techinically. I like the way the cloud matches the shape of the birds wings. Very nice.

Bonjour Pam,

Superbe prise,la pose de l˘iseau est magnifique.
Bravo et merci pour l'envoie.

Hello Pam,
I've looked through at some of your most recent shots with the MKIII. You seem to be getting the hang of it, without a doubt ;}
This is a wonderful capture - The pose is fantastic.
Your split BG adds some drama, giving one the feeling that this bird is going up, up, and away, high over the clouds!
So does the 70-200mm + your 2X out-perform the straight 100-400mm?
Very well done mf,
