Sand Gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa marica)
HABITAT: deserts and sub-desert steppes
DIET: grasses and shrubs
Status: endangered
The sand gazelles are quite small, lightly coloured antelope. Their backs and flanks are light beige and bellies are white. The colouring is obviously an adaptation to their habitat; deserts. They weigh up to 22 kg.
Both sexes are horned. Males' horns grow 25 to 30 cm long and females' are tend to be shorter and thinner. The horns arise close together and curve in at the tips.
The sand gazelles are the only antelope to give birth to twins regularly. Gestation period is just less than 6 months. The young spend the first days in shallow scrapes, or under a small bush, until strong enough to move with the adults.
I took this photo on Sir Bani Yas island.
There was a fence between these cute baby gazelles and me plus I was on a bus, so there was no way I could avoid the ugly wire of the fence. Unfortunately, you can see the crosses of wire on the background. |
