Orange Footed Sea Cucumber
Cucumaria frondosa
Habitat: rock substrate
Cut: 50 cm length/15 cm diameter max.
When its tentacles are to interior of its body, this animal bears well its name with its form and its greenish color brown which point out cucumber. The mouth of cucumber of sea is surrounded by ten to 30 tentacles which make it possible to capture remains of food or of small preys like shellfish. To nourish itself, it lets float its tentacles. It inserts then these last in its mouth to suck them with one. In the Mitis bay, one can observe cucumbers of sea failed alive the low tide mark of spring tide, at the time of the very windy periods. |
