I am not at all sure that this ID is correct.

The Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus), called the Rough-legged Hawk in North America, is a medium-large bird of prey. It is typically between 50 to 60 centimetres long with a 130 cm wingspan. The breeding range is northernmost Europe, Asia, and North America. It migrates further south in winter.

It breeds on cliffs, slopes or in trees, laying about four eggs, but more in good lemming years. It hunts over open land, eating mainly small mammals, and will come to carrion. This species, along with the Osprey, is one of the few large birds of prey to regularly hover.
This is a broad-winged raptor, typical of the genus Buteo. Compared to the Common Buzzard, it is longer-winged and more eagle-like in appearance. Its feet are feathered to the toes (hence its scientific name, meaning "hare-footed") as an adaptation to its arctic home range. Its toes are short for its size.

Hello Evelynn,
It appears as if he has caught something, his eye are glue downward towards his talons, or maybe he just stubbed a toe. Great image with superb detail showing the hawks plummage pattern well. Thanks for sharing evelynn.

Oh wow, Evelynn,
That, for sure, is a 10-point landing.
He nailed it and YOU nailed it.
What a perfect "gymnast" pose... even to the downward head.
Love the details on the underside of the wings..
and that fantastic "leg".
I have never seen a hawk like that.
Great job and TFS. : )

Great shot Evelynn, one problem. I had thought I figured I had identified a hawk properly on my profile. I thought it was a Rough legged hawk but you now have me confused. Great clarity in the shot. Very nice bird

Jay

Hi Evelynn,
this is a photo that was taken on a day not unlike the day we had here in High River today-a tough light to say the very least.Tough light or not this capture has excellent detail going for with a minimum of noise for the iso used, kudos for that.I think that those legging's are the bee's knees(no pun intended).I am a big fan of raptors and thank you sharing this one,a bird I don't recall ever seeing before now. Bob

very beautiful, TFS Ori

I wonder what would have happened if it were not white? Would it almost blend into the background....Very cool capture. you're into an arena in which I have very few chances and not much luck when I do get them. Fine3ly detailed as only the eye of an artist can do!

Identifying a bird of prey is not easy...
It's a beautiful bird, captured at a very good moment...
Once again a very good isolation through depth of field without loss of habitat info.
