I took this picture while walking in the Queen Sirikit Park. There are plenty of Oriental Magpie Robin around Bangkok. Like most birds they are very alert and difficult to get close to.

The Flower

I believe that this bird is in a 'rain lily' bed.

Family: Amaryllidaceae
Genus: Zephyranthes
Common Name: rain lily, rainflower, zephyr lily, fairy lily, ดอกบัวดิน

The common name of rain lily or rainflower came from the fact that it often bloom after raining.

The Bird

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Muscicapidae
Genus: Copsychus
Species: C. saularis
Common Name: Oriental Magpie Robin (นกกางเขนบ้าน)

The Oriental Magpie Robin is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher, family Muscicapidae. It is also known as Oriental Magpie Robin, Straits Robin and Magpie.

This magpie-robin is an insectivorous species which is a resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia, south China and the Philippines.

The Oriental Magpie Robin is found in open woodland, cultivated areas and around human habitation. It nests in a hole, often in a wall, laying 3-6 eggs which are incubated by both sexes.

Description
This species is 19cm long, including the long cocked tail. It is similar in shape to the smaller European Robin, but is longer-tailed. The male has black upperparts, head and throat apart from a white shoulder patch. The underparts and the sides of the long tail are white. Females are grey above and greyish white. Young birds have scaly brown upperparts and head.

The thumbnail doesn't do this justice, Jitti!
Despite the thumbnail making it look small on the image, it looks fine when opened with fine sharpness and detail and contrasting well against the rice plants in the BG. Fine POV and excellent composition too.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Hi Jitti,

I've only seen a magpie once and of course it was before I carried my camera around all the time. This is a great shot - so sharp - wonderful pose - excellent black and white. He stands out from the grass beautifully. Wonderful shot!

Hi Jitti.
I like wonderful natural scene and wide DOF. Exposure of the image is spot on despite the contrast subject. Sharpness and details are great as well as the low POV. Well done and kind regards.
