The bird in the picture is Lesser Goldenbacked Woodpecker, Dinopium benghalense The upper part of its plumage is golden yellow and black in colour. Lower part is buffy white streaked with black. The crown and occipital crest are crimson. The female differs from male as it has fore crown black speckled with white and only the occipital crest crimson. The black throat immediately separates it from other golden backed woodpeckers in the Indian region. They have a straight pointed bill, a stiff black coloured tail to provide support against tree trunks, and “yoked" feet, with two toes pointing forward, and two backward.
They are seen all over the India. There are four races in India based chiefly on the details of coloration.
Habitat: Seen in open tree and scrub jungle. They are partial to mango orchrds, groves of old trees and coconut plantation.
It moves up and down the trees in jerky spurts, directly or in spirals, tapping on the barks and chiseling away rotten wood for beetles and insects hiding in the crannies. They also feed on ants, fruits and flower nectar.
The woodpeckers practice Anting, grabbing the ants and rubbing them on its feathers. This practice presumably makes use of the ants' formic acid to keep feathers clean and parasite-free.
Call: It’s call is a loud, harsh sound “klre- klre” uttered mostly on the wing.
Flight: Their flight is dipping as typical of woodpeckers. We can hear the flapping of their wings because their feathers are heavier than most other birds.
Nest: An unlined hollow in a tree stem or branch excavated by the birds. They lay three eggs glossy white in color. Both sexes share parental duties.

The picture was taken with Nikon D200/Nikor 300mm+1.4 TC. The picture was slightly cropped ,levels adjusted, sharpened and resized for TN.

Hi Smitha, this is neat. I have never seen a Goldenbacked Woodpecker before, so thanks for the introduction here. The composition is good with him working on this tree and you've picked up very excellent colour and detail on this guy. I am particularly keen on that because I've been looking at that same lens combination you have used here. That looks good. Very nice and very helpful.

Thanks, John

Hi Smitha,
what a fascinating looking woodpecker and one that has been well captured by you.It is interesting how much like the Pileated Woodpecker it's head looks like but one look at the rest of it and you know that it isn't a pileated at all. Thanks for sharing this bird,a bird that until today I never even knew existed.Great accompanying note as well. Bob

Hello Smitha,
WOW! fantastic capture, beautfiul vivid colors and nice light, very good sharpness and depth of field, the blurred background is great, very nice details and terrific pose.

At shutter speed 15 and aperture value 5.6, you have turned the BG into a smooth collage of blurred colours, Smitha.
You need to be welcomed after the hiatus of a few weeks, if not months.
This Woodpecker is a very colourful creature and you have captured it extremely well on the trunk of a tree -- a place where they like to be and pecking away!
Superb sharpness, composition and colours.
Keep posting regularly.

I love this woodpecker. Does it make the sound like in the cartoon? Very beautiful satturated and brilliant colors, good composition and sharpness. Every time I see image of woodpecker, I always wanted to rotate the image to look at it, even though this is the way it is. Nice work. Thanks so much Smitha.

What a fabulous shot, Smitha!!!!!
This Woodpecker is so beautiful!
Stunning detail in the feathers and excellent sharpness.
A perfectly blurred noisless BG and the DOF is top-class!
As always the composition is very good and you've chosen a parallel POV which is easy on the eye.
Nice light and exposure.
Another stunner from you my friend!
Very, very well done,

Hi Smitha,

After a little pause you bounced back with a rainbow. Very nice bird. I wish I could frame this clear a picture of this bird. How can you use a tripod for framing birds? I find this bird to be of a little unsettling type and you may have to adjust your gyro axis to tilt/shift or pan for the best possible pov. I guess you are fairly successful in hiding yourself from the birds or camouflaging yourself.

Hello Smitha.
Lovely picture of Woodpecker. I like the colours and composition of this photo. Very good sharpness.

hi smitha,

Nice picture of this woody. Who high was it in the tree when u click this pic...because whenever i have seen it always perches in the higher branches...
a little more wood would have helped, but again its personal choice...

tks such nice pic.

Hi Smitha

Beautiful woodpecker and you've captured him very well.
Good sharpness and great plumage details
Well composed and I like the POV and good background

Hello Smitha,

Excellent picture of this woodpecker. Excellent composition, POV, DOF and sharpness. Wonderful vivid colours. The detail of the plummage is great!

beautiful capture.great sharpness and detail .wonderful colors and very ncie composition!

Dear Smitha
Wonderful shot of this beautiful Woodpecker.
Perfect focusing, exposure and BG.Superb shot my friend.

hello Smitha

superb shot of this Woodpecker, with the excellent luminosity
of the image, the beautiful colours, fine POV, excellent DOF,
i love the vertical framing but i would give just a little bit
less space at the back of the Woodpecker and just a little bit
more at the front, just a more view of the wood, TFS

Hi Smitha,
A nice capture of this beautiful wood pecker. Excellent sharp details and a lovely composition. Superb work even in low shutterspeed and this fella is not a stable one. 6 months back I didn't have a big camera just a simple point and shoot with 3x zoom and I was observing a lot of woodpeckers near my house. Now, when I own a big cam with 200mm zoom not a single woodpecker is visible what a frustration ;). Thanks a lot for sharing.

A beautiful woodpecker specimen depicted expertly in this lateral tele-macro shot with excellent plumage, pattern and colouration details Smitha, the characteristic stance on the tree and the finely OOF but colorful BG make this a very nice composition. Thank you indeed for sharing this fine take with us.

Hi Smitha,

Wonderful shot of this woodpecker, the colours and detail are so vivid, and the composition and nice tight crop are very effective! The simple uncluttered background works really well too. Great shot! Thanks, Doug

Smitha, Excellent picture. Even though these Woodpeckers are common, it is so difficult to spot them at a low level. Especially around Kerala, they prefer to punch holes in tall trees way up in the tree. You must be lucky to get one at ground level. The background and lighting are very good. It is incredible that the woodpecker was posing for you when you were shooting at 1/15 shutter speed! Thanks.

Hi Smitha

Now isn't that what one calls a typical (or classical) woodpecker pose? Neatly captured and presented to show this fine bird in all its magnificent splendour.

The vertical composition obviously was the correct choice and together with the right cropping gave it an appreciative edge that goes down well visually. Due to the totally OOF and well removed BG there is nothing else in the frame to distract the eye and cause it to wander off in search of anything else to discover so it remains stuck to the lovely bird and rather discover all the intricate beauty to be found. The red head, the sparkle (highlight) in the eye, the golden-yellow (almost golden-brown) jacket, the way the bird clings to the structure (is it a tree?), and the way how it uses its tail to balance itself at this peculiar angle. The detail on the plumage and other body parts all over are stunningly sharp and the colours are well saturated. One fine shot and worthy of a WOW.

Well done and TFS.

PS. Anna and I are off to the bush until the middle of next week. It is our 27th anniversary today and she is treating me on a mini-holiday for a couple of days at a place called Abu Madi which forms part of the Rhino Research Project. So, hopefully I will come back with some nice black rhino shots. See you on the rebound.

Hello Smitha,
Superb photo of this Golden-backed Woodpecker. Excellent clear colours and details. Great composition, POV, DOF and very beautiful BG. Very, very beautiful!

Hi Smitha,

Wonderful portrait of an exotic woodpecker! Little bit oversaturated to my taste, but it makes it even more tropical! Thank you,

Hi Smitha,

Beautifull, sharp, colourfull...
Amazing moment you have here, a perfect time.
I love this composition, that's a different eye !!!

Wish you the best, always.

What an awesome shot!I wonder how I missed it...But I never get to know:(
I have seen your work from time to time...and I keep wondering when I'll get to be as good as you...This kind of work that you display, as I keep saying to my friends, humbles people new to this art...
Do you remember the critique wherein I'd stated I don't care if others find noise, on one of your earlier posts?Well, I still hold that true...just as a poet has poetic licence, I feel any artiste has some artistic license...And you do use yours to the hilt...
Very well done!

Hello Smitha. Gorgeous looking woodpecker in its signatory pose. Stunning sharpness in brilliant color and well muted background. Well done and thanks for sharing. Regards. Jusni

Hi Smitha,
Outstanding shot of this Woodpecker with amazing colours and details on its plumage. The red crest looks marvellous and I like the intensity on its eye. Beautiful lighting and a fine DOF isolates it from the BG perfectly and turns it smooth. I like the way you have the trunk as a natural frame on one side and the creative negative space on the other. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.
