The species shown is a male of
- Lasiommata maera (Linnaeus, 1758)
- Nymphalidae, Satyrinae,
- tribe: Elymniini
- subtribe: Lethina

Common names:
English: Large Wall Brown
German: Braunauge

Species information
Although L. maera can largely resemble species of the genus Erebia by the upperside wing markings, it is not closely related to the genus Erebia. Based on morphological but also molecular data, the genus Lasiommata finds its position within the tribe Elymniini (Miller, 1968)

L. maera is widely distributed in Europe, in middle Asia and also found in North Africa.
It prefers dry open habitats with grass and rocks.
In the Alps, it can be found from the lower regions up to 2000m. The higher altitude forms lack the bright orange-brown markings of the wing upperside and look more like an Erebia (I will show a picture later). This form is also called f. monotonia,

Forewing length: about 22 - 28 mm.

Close relatives of L. maera are:
L. petropolitana, L. meadewaldoi, L. adrastoides and L. maerula.

Location
The picture was taken at the slopes of the 'Großer Laugen' (close to the Gampen-Pass. Altitude: about 1500 m.

Conditions
- natural light
- ISO 200
- handheld

Ciao Peter,

a bientôt
Laurent

Hello Peter, Lovely position. Great clarity superb angle. The composition is perfect and also the lighting. Ganesh

Woow, what a fine specimen on a thistle flower, both in fine focus and high detail Peter, pattern and colouration details of the underwings are clearly depicted against a pleasantly blurry greenish BG. Thanks for sharing this fine scene my friend.

Hello, Peter.
Absolutely gorgeous markings on the wings of this butterfly.
Patterns are so complex and the colors so subtle.
You captured them in excellent details and light.
A rather unusual pose... makes the shot all the more interesting.
