[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Green Tiger Beetle (Cicindela campestris) is an active hunter of other insects, very inclined to fly and run fast with its long legs. This makes it difficult to photograph out in the field and stretches both my patience and the range of my 420 mm equipment to its limits.

The best photographs of Tiger beetles are taken after capture, cooling them down in the fridge and letting them warm up on prepared sandy BG’s while the camera is set up on a tripod with flash. However, as all my shots are taken in situ I try to avoid using this method.

This image, taken out in the field, was taken with the camera hand-held after chasing it for at least half an hour at a distance of about 2 meters (another advantage of the 420 mm set-up).
It is by no means perfect, but I thought it worth posting to show the bright iridescent green and red colours, the long legs and a glimpse of the powerful mouth parts of this ‘tiger’.

The number of cream-coloured spots on the green wing cases varies between individuals, sometimes being nearly absent.

It appears in the spring, as early as the middle of April when the sun shines. It prefers bare sandy areas surrounded by vegetation. It tends to run and seek, rather than wait and pounce and one usually first sees it when it flies up after being disturbed.

Of the over 2000 species of tiger beetle spread around the world there are only 4 in Sweden, of which this species is the most common.
Thanks for viewing and have a nice weekend!

Hi Ivan,
well I glad that you do have enough patience as your efforts are well rewarded with this rather colourful looking and well detailed beetle. The emerald green metallic sheen is a very eye catching indeed and I have seen dragonflies with the same colour as well but didn't get very good captures of them.A well focused and detailed shot with an interesting point of view. Thanks for sharing this little jewel with us all. Bob

Hello Ivan,
it's always impressive for me to see close-ups of these shy and ultra-fast beetles.
Besides these strong photographer-unfriendly properties, their iridescent surfaces constitute the next problem.
Therefore, thank you for sharing this admirable and sharp picture of the tiger beetle.
Best wishes, Peter

Bellissima macro, ottimo POV, molto bella la composizione, eccellente nitidezza, bellissima la luminosità e i colori. Grazie e compèlimenti. Ciao Maurizio

I may be the only person on TN who at the age of 18 had a sharkskin green suit which looks just like this...I am always stopped in my tracks when I see it so common in insects such as this one so sharp and clear...but alas why it is called sharkskin I do not know..as sharks skin has no to little sheen at all...Very well seen in the proper lighting Ivan. You are the grand master of identification of all carbon based forms!
Bob

This Beetle certainly has a hunter's equipment on its face, Ivan.
The insect is really good looking and despite the problems faced by a photographer in shooting this fellow, you have done a marvellous job with your lens.
The green shiny colour on its back and copperish red on the rest looks beautiful.
It is a very good shot, indeed.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Ivan,

I can just picture you chasing this beetle! But I have been known to stalk birds frequently. I don't always catch them though. It was worth the chase for this - the irridescent green is wonderful. Excellent details from head to the bottom of those long legs. He stands out well from the sandy background.

Hola Sr. Ivan.

Hi,

On the road now and just marking now, will be back later...

Pekka

Hello Ivan!
I just returned from 4-days field studies with my students where I had possibility to "meet" Cicindela campestris too :)
This picture of male is really nice and has good quality. I like it a lot. Bravo also for patience and natural colours :)
All the est from Lodz,
Radomir

PS. If you agree I would like to add your photo to 2 tiger beetle themes :)

hello Ivan

stunning macro shot of this insect, WOW ! look at that right eye
severe glance on you, very fine POV, DOF and framing,
superb focus on the subject, on this image's environnement
this insect is the contrary (le contraire) of camouflage,
great luminosity of the image, with great sharpness and details,

TFS

Ivan, I never knew people do that for a photo!I am soooo happy you just captured it naturally, and did nothingof that kind!
very well done, this must've been a very difficult macro, especially handheld!
Very well done!
Cheers!

Hello Ivan,
Great work on this..and you had all that fun chasing em' :)
Excellent POV and comp with nice detail, exposure, DOF, and colors..
I've done some insect macro with the cumbersome MIII, but today I'll try working with the 400D. It has the additional crop factor which will be helpful.
Howard

Hej Ivan
Nice shot of this Green one :) Insects are not easy to photograph and you did good work here.

Jag har lyckats att fotografera en rosenfink men inte med bästa kvalitet. Hade inte med mig min stora kanon :(

hello Ivan,
The Cicindelas are always a challenge if you don't choose the fridge solution. Finally you caught it quite well, in a nice pose, showing its shiny metallic colour. I already ran quite often behind them without big success.
Thanks and best regards

Very nice shot of this Green Tiger Beetle. I've found a few mini tiger beetles but never one as magnificent as this!
Wonderful colours and good light.
Excellent composition.
Good sharpness and fine detail.
Great DOF.
I am stunned by the macro capability of the 300mm f/4 and a converter... what the lens' minimum focusing distance?

Very well done once again,

Joe
