TURDUS MERULA (Linnaeus 1758)

Merle noir

Family: Turdidae
Size: 25-29cm

One of the most well-known bird in Europe. The male's melodious singing, posted on the top of a tree or a roof is familiar to almost everybody.
Adult males have black feathers and females are brown or greyish with spots on the breast.
I have seen this Blackbird as I was walking through Berlin Zoo and I couldn't resist to take the picture, even if I'm not a bird specialist. I allowed myself also a picture-composition not respecting all given rules
We have so rainy weather for weeks that it is not easy to find some insects or butterflies . It is why I had to dig in my archives..

Hi Anne,
Very nice capture.I liked details on black plumage and catchlight in eyes a lot.POV,BG,pose of bird and composition are also wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

Bonjour Anne,

Belles couleurs naturelles.
Bonne journée,

Hi Anne,
a lovely capture of this busy looking Blackbird, they seem to be everywhere here at the moment, must be a good year for them. The eye is particularly striking and the DOF excellent. Interesting composition with the bird on the left too, but i think it works!
well done and good weekend to you.

Sometimes when I see good tonality as this I quickly look to see if it was a Nikon, but alas...my competitor the Canon does it again:-) Very nice Anne. You were able to bring out detail well under poor lighting...I think opposite of most photographer...well ones who haev been in business for only 10 years but then learn...the less contrast and the better lens will pick out super details which might not have been seen in direct lighting...Nicely composed!

Hello Anne,
Lovely capture of the male Blackbird collecting food for its young. I like its pose here and the sharp focus on the eye. Excellent details and natural colours in this fine composition.
Many thanks and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hello Anne,
Just as the rains have prevented you from photographing insects, so has the drought in Sweden almost had the same effect. There are very few butterflies as they die quickly in the heat when there are no flowers to feed on.
This is a fine capture of a male Blackbird that has at lest found some insect larvae to feed its young on. Nice sharpness, POV and composition.
TFS this fine image,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Anne,
Very beautiful. A remarkable composition, but a very good choice. Great sharp focus and a fantastic DOF. Beautiful clear and natural colours.
Have a good weekend,

Nice capture. Though I now use Canon but I agree that pictures from Nikon lens are more stimulating than any others except Minolta.

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Anne

I love it, it is a great shot. It always amazes me how many worms they can carry, they almost look like puffins with the sand eels. Great sharp details, excellent POV and a wonderful pose

Ideales Fussballwetter.
Mit Dank und herzlichen Grüßen,

Hello Anne,
Nicely captured on the Black Bird with mouthful of food!
the image is sharp especially on the eye with great details
well done
best regards

Hallo Anne
Fantastic details all over of this black bird. A great accomplishment, with perfect focus, sharpness and point of view. The black feathers show up so well in the light. I just love the yellow circle around the eye, the pose and of course the catch of food still in the beak rounds this image of perfectly. A great shot on all counts. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

Hi Anne,
Outstanding shot of this great looking Blackbird in a fine pose and with a catch. Very neat and sharp image with nice colours. Perfect lighting and exposure levels. The eye looks very expressive. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Beautiful composition. A lovely capture of this beautiful bird.
Best wishes,

Hallo Anne,

Hi Anne,
A nice capture of the Black bird,. From your notes i presume this is a male.I would love to hear them sing....and this one looks busy with the meal....i like the way its eye sticks out and looking at its pose almost in a braised position, i am guessing it flew off as soon as you clicked...thanks for sharing this one..

Excellent shot, Anne.
Very well seen.

Wonderful composition of this lovely bird Dear Anne. I like a lot the way you captured the yellow circle around the eye, which is an amazing characteristic beauty of the bird.

Great bird shot, thanks to your archives!

Hello Anne,
We will not discuss the shallow DOF as the focus is where it should be. Besides the foodstuff element says this photo is taken at the decisive moment. Well done!
