Good Morning Everyone,

I am off to the coast in a short time but can happily spend a few minutes with you first.

Yesterday, I went for a walk along the lanes near my house. I had my trusty casio with me and so was able to capture one of a cluster of cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) that was growing on the edge of farmland. I don't remember seeing it last year so was pleased at its return.

Centaurea cyanus (Cornflower, Bachelor's button, Basket flower, Bluebottle, Boutonniere flower, Hurtsickle) is a small annual flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe.

It is an annual plant growing to 40-90 cm tall, with grey-green branched stems. The leaves are lanceolate, 1-4 cm long. The flowers are most commonly an intense blue colour, produced in flowerheads (capitula) 1.5-3 cm diameter, with a ring of a few large, spreading ray florets surrounding a central cluster of disc florets. The blue pigment is protocyanin, which in roses is red.

In the past it often grew as a weed in crop fields. It is now endangered in its native habitat by agricultural intensification, particularly over-use of herbicides, destroying its habitat; in the United Kingdom it has declined from 264 sites to just 3 sites in the last 50 years. It is also however, through introduction as an ornamental plant in gardens and a seed contaminant in crop seeds, now naturalised in many other parts of the world, including North America and parts of Australia.

Hi Beverley.
This spring the cornflowers surround my countryside house. There are not many plants there however my wife has replaced some of them to our garden. Nice picture and very good representation of the beauty. I like many lights in the shot and natural pleasant colours. DOF and details are very good too. My best regards and TFS.

Hello Bev,
Lovely close view of a Cornflower, a beautiful 'weed' that has almost been destroyed but occasionally we see plenty of them in a field here mixed with poppies - a lovely sight! I like the low OV here showing the flower in profile very nicely. Lovely colours and well composed.

A lovely image of this Centaurea.
The lighting and colours are very good.
These really attract the butterflies.
