Welcome all,

Macro shot of Hover fly, propably Eristalis dimidiata (male)- correct me if I'm wrong.. yes I was wrong:), it is Eristalis lineata [horticola] female- thanks to member Marie [mariki].

Picture was taken yesterday, by the forest road near my flat in Olsztyn.
I discovered new, interesting world of insect thanks to macro photography and now I don't go enywhere without macro lens. Still have much to learn about it.

Original picture in RAF format, cropped a little, not much correction in Photoshop, noise reduced in NeatImage, then resized and sharpened.

Species information:

Classification:
Kingdom Animalia (Animals)
Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods)
Class Insecta (Insects)
Order Diptera (Flies)
No Taxon (Aschiza)
Family Syrphidae (Syrphid Flies)

Other Common Names
- Flower Flies
- Hover Flies

Size
1-35 mm, typically 10-20 mm

Identification
Flies often seen about flowers. Bodies often have black-and-yellow bands, presumably mimicking hymenoptera. Some even buzz like bees. (They do not bite or sting, however.) Family can be recognized by spurious wing vein, see, for example, Arnett, fig.

Food
Adults often feed on nectar and/or pollen.

Life Cycle
Larvae may feed on decaying vegetation, aquatic detritus, or wet wood, others are predators, especially of aphids. Some larvae are myrmecophiles, i.e., live in ant nests, and a few are associated with wasps. A few attack living plants, especially bulbs of forbs. Larvae that live in water with much decaying organic matter have a long anal breathing tube, and are called "rat-tailed maggots".

I hope You enjoy watching,
Thank You for any comments and criticques.

Cheers!!

Hello Adrian,
Superb sharp macro of E. lineata with excellent DOF to allow this Dronefly to be sharp against the blurred flowery BG. The lighting and colours are great and the composition superb.
Thanks for sharing this outstanding image,
Ivan

Excellent shot, bravo!!! FG and BG are in complete harmony which takes the viewer to the moment of capture. I love this.

How big is the fly in reality? What percent of the image was cropped, never seen such a huge fly :-)

Hallo Adrian
The details of this fly is is unbelieveably beautiful. The wings look like they have been created out of glass. A perfect macro with super sharp focus. I think the portrait framing on this is excellent and the exposure looks just great. I am really stunt by its beauty. Congratulations, this is just great. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Anna
