This morning I went to Botanic Garden to catch few dragonflies and butterflies. But as always in such cases butterflies were invisible and dragonflies boring. So I went to my favourite part of The Garden with many herbs, wild flowers and sandy paths. These paths are very crowded by many flies, small digging wasps, hover flies and predatory Tiger Beetles [Cicindela hybrida]. I spended good hour to watch how these fierce creatures hunt for prey. I was very surprised. Theirs main strategy is to do... nothing. Seriously :-) Most of time they're just standing on straight legs, watching around and waiting. For some weird and unknown to me reason most flies and wasps try to land around or even on beetle. On sea of light sand they look like dark, high island and maybe this is what drew attention of flying insect. Or maybe beetles look like something to eat for flies? I don't know. sure thing is that flies tries to land on beetles and this isn't good idea. One fast move of big jaws and another fly becomes ex-fly :-)

I hope our expert Radek will tell us more about it!

This Tiger Beetle, though lethal for flies, is a handsome creature alright, Greg.
An amazingly sharp and colourful macro of the subject from the most appropriate point of view.
The range of shining colours on the insect comes out vividly in this brilliant shot.
TFS and regards.

Wow! What a beauty Greg - is it real?

I have NEVER seen an insect like this before. I love his multi colours and his hairy legs and shoulders and tummy. Nice and sharp too.

100% better than dragonflies and nearly as good as ducks.

Well done MF
Janice

Hello Grzegorz,

the beetle has been shown many times on TN but your portrait is simply outstanding. The great poise! The beetles may do nothing as you say unless you want to ake a picture of them ...Extremely well done my friend! Thanks for the interesting note as well.
Best regards
Dietrich
