[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last weekend I was out looking for bugs in the bush near my home when I saw two Bush Stone Curlews. I couldn’t believe that they were so close to my home in suburbia! One of them scuttled off into the bush whilst the other stood very still and allowed me to walk up quite close. No doubt because of their colouring, he was hoping that he would camouflage into the surroundings and I wouldn’t be able to see him.

It was late afternoon and I was shooting into the sun, hence the lack of colour in the ground vegetation, although it is very dry and all is brown in the bush at the moment. I quickly tried a few settings hoping to get something decent.

Now that I know they are in this part of the bush, I will be sure to visit again, knowing that they might stand still and try to hide….a photographer’s dream!

Bush Stone-Curlews
Are also known as Bush Thick-Knee, Southern Stone-Curlew, Bush Curlew and Stone Plover. They are approximately 60 cm long and are grey-brown with a long neck and legs. They have a large eye and white eyebrow, dark mask through face, short grey beak, ragged pale band through middle of wing and have a streaked underbody. In flight, their neck is extended, legs trail beyond tail and have white patches in outer wing.

They have an eerie, high-pitched, accelerating wails or repeated double note. Their habitat is woodland and grassland, also farms, golf courses, parks and open areas in urban areas. They are widespread in the greater Brisbane region and are present all year.

Nice capture of the Bush Stone Curlews, I've never seen one before, loverly detail in the plumage, and it certainly blends in well with the background, that eye is amazing, t.f.s all the best,

I like your note so much and nice estimation of your own picture. I like it a lot too, its expressiveness and great details. Pictured scene is very attractive at whole. Hi Sue

Well done on find the stone-curlew near your home. They became locally extinct in 1930s down our way, due to predation by fox's.
Pity about the OE on the top of the head. Adjust the EV to -1 may have helped in reducing this when shoot towards the sun direction.
Good sharpness and composition otherwise.

He does blend into the BG really well - but he didn't fool you Sue! He looks like he is standing so still too.
I've never seen one before, but I will admit I've only visited your wildlife parks over there and I don't think they could restrain these in one of them.

Hi Sue,
This is an interesting pose that you got of the Curlew.
It looks quite curious trying to ascertain what is going on as it looks in the other direction with a tirn of its head.The details on the bird looks wonderful with good details.
Th capture made in its natural habitat make the shot more interesting.

The plumage in its duotones looks quite interesting and the bird seem to merge very wel, with the surroundings.Very well done.
