Hoatzin was my dream bird in Peru. It was one of the species I wanted to see a lot, in the region I visited (north Amazon) our guides told me that we could see some by chance as they are very shy...

On an early morning walk we took in the jungle in a seasonal flooded forest to be honest I was tired of trying to walk in the mud, because of the heat, the humidty, the fire ants, bugs, and the mosquitos... So I decided to take a break and let others walk.I stayed in a specific location without sitting anywhere because of the fire ants. After a while our local guide (a fisherman of a village nearby) came and told me to come, I was thinking to myself this would really be something that worths to make me walk again in all this undesirable conditions.
And there they were 4 Hoatzins hidden deep in the jungle...
I watched them for about half an hour and I took some photos. Here is one of them. They did not come out as good as I wanted them to be because of the lush vegetation, and the fire ants in the branches around me... But still I consider myself lucky cause I was able to see them (only once in 8 days)

Hoatzin
Opisthocomus hoazin

*ID: Large (64 cm); rusty colored with buffy breast; crest on head, large wings, long tail

HABITAT: In small family groups along forested swamps, cochas and small rivers;often sitswith wings spread.

REGION: Amazon

The Hoatzin is one of the most intriguing and unusual species you can see in the flooded forests and marshes of Amazonian Peru.

There is only one species in its family, Opisthocomidae (closely related to cuckoos). It is restricted to upper Amazon and its tributaries. This turkey-sized bird looks for all the world like some prehistoric dinosaur with feathers.

Hoatzins are usually in loose flocks of 5 to 10 birds in bushes along the edges of slow-moving streams or forested lakes. They announce their displeasure at your presence with hisses and croaks just before they weakly flap their wings to fly to the next branch over the water. They eat only leaves and have adigestive system, similar to a cow's, that uses fermentation to digest otherwise undigestible plant parts.

Hello Selen,
I know these are very shy birds so you were very lucky and what a superb capture you got!!
Not just one, but two! The top one is brilliant and I love the other one peeping out between the branches. Great details and wonderful natural colours. I like the composition too. I can imagine your struggle but I bet you got lots of pictures during that half hour!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hello Selen,
Great photo. I can understand your feeling. In Ecuador I have seen them too, but in the branches. Just like the low one in this photo. So I made a WS with only the left one. I hope you don't mind.
Regards,
Peter

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

kargaşada iyi yakalamışsın digeride dallarınn arasından bakıyor ellerine saglık Selen

Hi Selen,
A very interesting picture about this odd species. Effort you´ve done to catch them has it worth; as well in middle of jungle and tree leaves are difficult to take photos and you´ve did it well.
Greetings
Hernán

PD: You´ve written a funny intro! :D

Good picture, despite the circumstances. A forest bird has to look like forest bird. Well done.

Hi Selen,

I can see why this was your "dream bird." I must admit I had never heard of a Hoatzin. And I certainly have never seen a face like this. I love the hair-do and that big eye. I can see the eye peering out of the bushes of the second bird. Wonderful natural colors and excellent details. Thank you for the introduction to this amazing Hoatzin.

Jane

Hi Selen

I have always been lucky with these birds and have been able to see them in Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela - quite a few - but always in bad light :(

Great shot showing them in typical pose with good detail.

Hello Selen,
It must have been well worth the tortures caused by the heat, insects and mud to be able to make such a fine capture of this primeval bird, the Hoatzin, especially when the result is so fine technically and esthetically in its natural habitat together with another that is more hidden.
Thanks for sharing this fine and unusual image,
Best wishes,
Ivan
