Hi all

Macros are fun but I have also wanted to photograph birds. But with a P&S, I have not been getting that kind of great results the way I want to. But then there are moments when I am also caught by this bug to upload a bird shot, even when the shot isn’t the perfect one. So presenting to you Pycnonotus cafer (red-vented bulbul) . I am not very sure whether this is a juvenile. The colours on the bird does not really give one the feel but its open beak suggests so. My memory fails to recall whether the beak was open for a call or not.

It drizzled almost all day that day and in the afternoon when the sun came out for a brief while, this one was out sitting on the bottle brush branch. The shot was taken from my balcony.

Busy days are here for me…, so I will take my own time to come and look at your galleries. Meanwhile, have fun …

The red-vented bulbul is a noisy, gregarious bird distinguished by a conspicuous crimson patch below the root of the tail. It is aggressive and chases off other bird species and may also help to spread the seeds of other invasive species. It is an agricultural pest, destroying fruit, flowers, beans, tomatoes and peas. It occurs naturally from Pakistan to southwest China and has been introduced to many Pacific Islands, where it has caused serious problems by eating fruit and vegetable crops, as well as nectar, seeds and buds.

The male and female are similar in appearance, although the male tends to be slightly larger. It is usually found in trees, around secondary growth and shrub, cultivation, parks and gardens. It is also a quick flyer with a flight that is recognisable by being somewhat bouncy rather than even. The nest is cup-shaped, made of plant matter, with spider webs binding the outside. It is lined with soft material. In it are laid 2 to 5 pale pink to reddish eggs marked with darker spots and streaks. There are often two to three broods each year. When not breeding, they tend to form large flocks and gather together in communal roosts.
Thanks for looking: )

Hola Iris, bonita fotografia, con buena luz y color.
El fondo desenfocado nos deja ver bonitas formas y tonos de color. Un saludo

hello iris,

fine capture of the red vented bulbul, looks like its singing the rain song, the vertical composition looks good here,

i totally agree that its quite difficult shooting birds with point and shoot but i must say that it isnt easy with dslrs too untill & unless you have 400mm plus zoom range with good skills. I used to think that i will be able to take good bird shots when i will upgrade to dslr but with 300mm lens its quite difficult or may be i have to polish my skills further. shooting birs is very tough and you did well here,

tfs & regards

Hello Iris,
I remember the Red-vented Bulbuls well from Delhi but I never managed to photograph one! This is an excellent capture, in spite of the rain. I like its singing pose and details are very sharp and colours natural. Well composed too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Iris,
Beautiful photo of this Bulbul. Excellent clear colours and good sharpness. There's a bit of noise around the bird and branch, but it's still a beauty.
Good composition.

Cool bird Silpa, love the POV and squawkin' pose..
Good comp in the vertical splitting the frame, space right.
Great color and exposure too :)
Well done!

Hi Silpa

Lovely shot of the Bulbul.
You have captured a nice pose with the bird in full squawk.
Good details and exposur
Lovely natural colours too.
It is so hard catching the birdies, I only manage it when they don't see me or are so busy singing they don't care that I'm there.

Hi Silpa,

A wonderful shot of a red-vented bulbul with splendid pov/dof and wonderful details. I also likee the BG my friend. Great shot indeed.
TFS this beauty.

Hi,just marking,no time,thanks for share,Luciano

Dear Iris,
very nice work, well captured details. TFS. with best regards.vab.

Do not under-rate the potential of a point-and-shoot camera, Silpa. Handled thoughtfully, they can and do leave "heavy" gizmos far behind. You have only to look at the works of Ulla and Anna to see my point.
Your image of a Red-vented Bulbul is faultless in terms of what we expect in a bird picture -- good perspective, sharp colours and details on the plumage and, of course, the focus on the eye.
In short, you have taken a lovely bird picture and thanks for sharing it.

Hallo Silpa
This is such a lovely sight. The details portrayed in your image are great and most delightful. The bird’s open beak is a smacker and definitely a winner. The patterns of the back feathers and beautifully displayed I just love the tiny patch of red seen in between. Your greenish background emphasise the beautiful "sunny and bright" sight of the whole image. As you mentioned maybe not the perfect shot, but a very pleasant one indeed.
Kind regards and thanks for sharing.
