Dear Friends!

Today my friend Horia and I were talking about sending photos of dragon and damselflies on TN. We both agreed that this season is very good for hunting d-flies. And then Horia proposed kind of friendly competition - who of us two will send more different species of d-flies on TN this year. I picked up the glove with real pleasure :-) Let's see who will be winner, competition will be over with end of 2008.

I checked my previous posts from this year and counted that I posted nine different species of d-flies till now. Today specie is tenth.

This is Sympecma fusca - Common Winter Damselfly - maybe not very showy, but interesting for sure. This specie can survive winter in imago form.

List of my posted d-flies species:

Coenagrion puella - Azure Damselfly
Libellula quadrimaculata - Four-spotted Chaser
Calopteryx splendens - Banded Demoiselle
Ischnura elegans - Blue-tailed Damselfly
Lestes dryas - Robust Spreadwing
Anax imperator - Emperor Dragonfly
Orthetrum cancellatum - Black-tailed Skimmer
Sympetrum danae - Black Darter
Erythromma najas - Red-eyed Damselfly
Sympecma fusca - Common Winter Damselfly

Your move Horia :-)

Hi Greg

As i wrote in a reply just now, i don't know if this is a fair competition, but i think it will be fun none the less...and rewarding for TN, too :)

This is a great addition to your very beautiful list. As i read it, i saw that it contains some species i have never seen yet in nature - Sympetrum danae or Erythromma najas - as i said before, i am jealous :)

This is a wonderful shot of this Sympecma fusca - and from what it looks like, it's a very fresh adult.
The vertical composition is lovely here and it goes well with the damsel's position on that long grass.
The natural light is gorgeous and it pulls out the best details of this species'.
Impeccable sharpness and spot-on DOF make this an outstanding macro, my friend! Wonderful work in every way! Good luck and i hope to see more :)

Cheers and TFS

How long is it until the end of the year Red Greg? It's like waiting for Santa to come at Christmas time... I can't wait. . .

But, looking at this pic of Sympecma fusca - Common Winter Damselfly, I also think it isn't very showy (your words) but it is interesting - it looks like a dried grass stem - it certainly must have good camouflage in the dried grasses.

But where are its wings? Yes, I see them - quite an amazing looking D-fly. Her wings are tightly held against her body - well captured MF

Hello Greg,
Good work! It's very sharp without being too sharp. Lovely lighting and good POV.
All the best in the competition...:-)

I think the notion of yours and Horias is wonderful...it gives many a wider perspective and a VERY wide area for side by side...subjective as art and photos are...there is no winner but the person looking and reading...Cool notion Greg.

hello greg,
amazing macro, i have never seen such fine result from a lens like sigma 70/300 which you produce, the sharpness is amazing and the details are great, very well composed shot,
excellent work,
tfs & regards

Hi Greg,
pretty good and simple image of this damselfly (fine specimen).
the black border either side could have been avoided, its not adding to the image. tfs.

Hi Greg,
i will be interested to see what happens in your competition - you are both so talented! Anyway, this is a great shpt - very well composed with excellent detail and DOF - WELL DONE!

Hi Greg

Excellent super sharp image of this unusual damsel. I am surprised that it can survive your northern winter. Excellent POV and DOF, beautifully composed with an excellent OOF background.

Let the deserving contestant carry the day by the end of this year, Greg. But mind you, Horia is a tough contender and you would need all the luck and resourcefulness to knock him out. Happy first round!!!
This 10th damsel of the year looks prim and proper with its wings neatly folded.
And don't tell me it is not beautiful; it is just smashing with those lovely designs on its thorax and abdomen.
I will keep a vigil over the contest.
All the best!

Hello my senior friend!:))
Many thanks for your kind words on my second TN anniversary!
This is a great capture of a female S. fusca, a rare species in Sweden that I have yet to see. The technical features are excellent as are the POV, lighting, BG and composition.
It will be interesting to see the results the Odonata competition between you and Horia!
Regards, Ivan

Hi Greg,

This will be an interesting competition to watch! We are the ones who benefit by seeing so many wonderful dragonflies. This Common Winter Damselfly is beautiful in her simplicitiy and sleekness. Fantastic details from end to end. Lovely shades of brown and tan. Looks magnificent against the green background.

Hello Greg,
You've chosen a fine green background for this very nice Damselfly that I've never seen.
Great focus and sharpness and natural colours. Well composed too!
