I was able to get up to the New Forest today as the weather was better but windy. I had just turned off the main road to enter the Forest when i saw this bird. I was able to get a quick shot from the car window . This was taken hand held. This is the first time i have taken and posted a picture of this Bird.

Lapwing ( Vanellus vanellus )
This Bird is distinguished by its unique wispy Crest.
The Lapwing is Europes largest and most familiar Plover.
At a distance it looks black and white but a close view reveals glossy greenish upperparts.
It is very sociable and breeds in loose colonies on undisturbed ground.
The males perform spectacular tumbling aerial displays while calling loudly.
Outside the breeding season it forms large flocke on fields and pastures, often with Golden Plovers and Black-headed Gulls.
It gets its name from its flappy instantly recognizable flight style and has broad rounded wings.
The Crest of the Female is shorter than the Males.
If a Lapwing dives at you in summer with a shrill weew-ee call it is trying to protect its eggs or young so you must watch where you walk in case you step on them.
They nest in a shallow hollow on open ground lined with grass. 3-4 eggs, 1 brood. In April-June.
It tilts forward to pick up Insects and Spiders from the ground or they pull Earthworms from soil. They often tap their foot on the ground to attract or reveal prey.
The Species is unmistakable.

Hi Nick!

Car window, handheld and 1/80? Result is great! This is rare case when BG is as important as main subject. Both looks excellent. Bird is sharp and in nineresting pose and BG colorfull and well composed. Lapwing is rare guest on TN.

This one has dancing patterns...it is a lively shot Nick...I shall write you privately as this is a super nice and quite different angle. You seem to be broadening your horizons.

Hi Nick.
What a clear shot of a very cute bird and so nice scenery. I like transparency of the image. Clean rich colours and delicate lighting. Grass-flower canvas is perfect and details and sharpens of the bird image as well as its exposure are spot on. Bravo. Well done.

Hello Nicholas
Lost between the flowers. It seems like this little lapwing stopped for a moment to smell the flowers (if birds can actually smell it at all). Beautiful paterns in the feathers and lovely colours. I like how it stand out against the green grass. Rehanna

Hi Nick,
Very good capture of Lapwing with good pose and composition, sharp details, good BG and nice natural colours.

Destacaría la iluminación de esta toma, que le confiere una viveza y gracia especial. El ave parece que pose para tí y la enfocaste de manera precisa. Preciosa.
Saludos Nicholas: Josep Ignasi.
