thanks Kathleen for the pointers for making this photo look better. pls take a look of the workshop photos : ) thanks.

Dear all,

this Black Capped Lory was taken in the Edward Youde Aviary of Hong Kong Park, where an elevated walkway allows visitors to walk through the tree canopy and get really close to the birds.

I hope you'd like this photo - I like the eye contact with this bird - as if it is trying to study the one - me - who took the photo : )

I look forward to your comments and pointers for improvement. many thanks!

Chrs,
Man Yee

The Black-capped Lory, Lorius lory, also known as Western Black Capped Lory or the Tricolored Lory, is a parrot found from Java through New Guinea. It is a colorful and relatively robust lory (31 cm). There are seven subspecies, all with green wings, red heads and body around the wing, a black cap, grey-black cere, yellow underwings, and blue legs and belly. Most also have a blue nape and mantle (area between wings on the back).

Inhabits the primary forest and forest edges in most lowland areas up to 1000m (sporadically to 1750m), but not monsoon forest or coconut plantations. Usually found in pairs and occasionally in groups of 10 or more. Their diet includes pollen, nectar, flowers, fruit and insects. The cyanuchen subspecies is somewhat endangered, with fewer than 5000 individuals remaining.

Hi MY Wong.
Beautiful bird, great colour. The eye contact is great, well taken.
A slight lighten to the photo would help the parrot stand out a little more from the background, it's a little dark, but that is individual preference.
Again, individual preference, for the apple being a whole and lighter object and more to the forground, it does compete a little taking the attention first to the eye and away from the parrot. Your parrot deserves all the attention, he is beautiful.
A crop taking the apple right into the corner so it does not stand out as a stand alone object might help, again individual preference. I'll try and give you the idea in a workshop.

Kathleen

Hi

I have had a look at the original and the workshop and the pose of the bird is good. It centres the attention on the intelligent looking eye. Maybe a bit of fill in flash would also have helped when the image was taken.

Hello Manyee!
Good photo of this beauty and funny bird. Very good composition.
Maybe it's little to dark.

Funny...it brings to mind an old saying...My first look went to the bird but my eyes for some reason settled on the apple. Not sure why..and then a verse came to me...it was/is perhaps religious in nature but can be taken by many others in same way.."Anyone can count the apples in a tree, but only God can count the trees in an apple"...Bob Schuller,,,,,anyway it is a fine image...could be just one small tad sharper but I'm guessing you might have known that and I think it might possibly be done in workshop, but you are way too good at workshop:-)

Hello MY Wong,
Great colour and pose. Good eye contact. But you have a little bit of noise. I don't know if is your
preference, but I would like have all the bird at focus, with a greater apperture. If your plan is
to have the apple and bird head, you have managed very well.

Hello Man Yee. Nice shot at the parrot which is very colorful. Sharp detail in the eyes and isolated well against the blurry background. Good framing and very well done. Best regards. Jusni
