The Olympic games just ended today but here in TN gallery one tournament is still going on! The dragonfly game between Poland (represented by Grzegorz (red45)) and Romania (represented by Horia (horia)) took last few weeks but it is still alive, and that is the reason why I decided to present you a dragonfly picture today :>
And this picture is dedicated to these two players-photographers :>

This is a male of Crocothemis erythraea (Libellulidae) - Broad Scarlet, Scarlet Darter, the only one member of this genus known from Europe.
I must say that I was hunting for this species with my camera for the last 3 years, in Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Turkey... Finally I won with the dragonfly and took the picture in Greece! :>

Here are so basic details about species:

Distribution: in Europe more common only in Southern part, but known also from Central and Western regions of continent. Noted even from British Isles in 1995! Except Europe it is known also from great part of Africa and western Asia.

Habitat: open stagnant waters, including brakish lagoons (this picture was teken in such habitat).

Activity of adults: from VI to VIII, in the Sahara most probably all year.

Sexual dimorphism: males red, females brown-orange.

Body lenght: 36-45mm.

And that is all as for now, let's return to Greg & Horia tournament! ;>

good focus and fine angle on this red! dragonfly :)

You should have gone into the game with Gregorz and Horia! this woulda been an eye popper..and it is still one..It looks like fire engine red...perhaps this one is an EMT?:-) super sharp, but your borderline on being a pro at this...Very nice addition with super notes..

Hi Radek!

Big thanks for dedication and advertisement of our D-flies Game :-) Believe me or not, but I looked for this specie on internet earlier today. Its colours are stunning. Very nice composition on green BG.

Tournament will start again when Horia returns from Croatia. I'm sure he'll bring many interesting shots of new species!

Hi Radomir,

A wonderful tribute to Greg and Horia. I bet you were thrilled to get this fantastic shot after waiting for three years. You captured him in a wonderful position with the flowing wings. Beautiful colors and details of the entire dragonfly. A lovely setting and composition.

Powerful Crocothemis species from Europe, Radomir.
The image is well captured with excellent focus, colours and details on the subject.
The two competitors from Poland and Romania deserve this dedication.
Thanks and regards.

Great image Radomir. Amazing colour with excellent exposure and detail.
Lovely position on the old seedhead so we can see all of him and wings out.

Hi Radomir,

that's the spirit! As a good entomologist you hunt for the insects that you know or want to know but you don't let pass the spectacular ones. Here you enter the funny game between Horia and red45 with an Ace. Excellent photography, as usual with you.

Best regards

Hi Radomir.
You are luckier photographer. You have met so beautiful specimen. I did not met dragonflies almost two years and only this summer I took whole series of one species.
Magnification and POV are amazing as well as wide DOF and great details. Dry plant as a stage for cute model is looked at the scene nicely. Busy BG is well blurred and coloured. My compliments and thanks for so attractive shot.

Zachwycające zdjęcie!!!
Ważki są cudowne i bardzo ruchliwe ;)
Bardzo ładnie ją uchwyciłeś. Doskonała technika, ostrość, kadr i kolory.

Hi Radek

Nice to see you here again with an active participation! I know you've been very busy this season but i also hope to see some very interesting photos from your studies :)

Thank you for this dedication and for advertising our "Odonata Olympics" :) As Greg and i decided, i think this competition is interesting but also fruitful for TN :)

You shot here completes our species list :) It also reminds me that i, too, have seen this Scarlet Darter and must look for some good photos about it :)
Your shot is very nice, showing the front part very well, in sharp details and in excellent light.
Also, the colors are very nice and complemented by the greens in the BG.
That aside, the presentation for the species in your note is very interesting and useful for anyone who would want to search for it.

Bravo and TFS
