This beautifull Aranea diadematus is called in Polish 'Krzyzak'. Krzyzak means knight of the cross and is popular name for Teutonic Knight. By the way Teutonic Knights haven't got 'good press' in Poland. They're well known for every child as lethal foes of our country :-)

The European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) or diadem spider, also called the cross spider in Eastern Europe, is a very common and well-known orb-weaver spider in Western Europe. Araneus diadematus also lives in parts of North America, in a range extending from New England and the Southeast to the Northwestern United States and adjacent parts of Canada.

Individual spiders' colouring can range from extremely light yellow to very dark grey, but all European garden spiders have mottled markings across the back with five or more large white dots forming a cross. The white dots result from cells that are filled with guanine, which is a byproduct of protein metabolism.[1]

The third pair of legs of garden spiders are specialized for assisting in the spinning of orb webs. These spiders also use them to move around on their web without getting stuck. These legs are useful only in the web; while on the ground, these legs are of little value.

Garden spiders have been known to stridulate when threatened.

It is hard to provoke a garden spider to bite - if it does, the bite is slightly unpleasant, though utterly harmless to humans.

Hi Greg

Another great macro from you, my friend and also a lovely and original presentation of this speceis. I had no idea that one could find a link between the "Cross spider" (as we call it here) and the Teutoni Knigts so fast :)

Your shot is excellent, with a full focus on the spider and excellent DOF to keep all of it in focus.
The details and colors are good, too and therefore the cross on its absomen is clearly visible.
Well done, as usual :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: my next photo is a d-fly again so i hope you didn't think you've won yet? :))

Hi fiend Greg,

Gorgeous shot... love the detailed, and sharp markings on it's abdomen. Also like the earth colors. And the diagonal markings on the leaf adds to the feel of quickness and motion. A true spider crusader set to trap and feed upon the infidel enemies of the garden.

Pozdrawiam,
Jurek

Hello Grzegorz,

Beautiful capture of this cross spider and its shadow. I like very much the composition. Excellent sharpness. Superb light and colours. The cross spiders are very numerous this year and they begin to be very large here.

Hi Greg

A great macro image captured of this lovely spider. The top view gives one a good POV to see and appreciate the design of the markings on the spider's abdomen. I like the composition with the spider taking centre stage and the leaf running at an angle through the image. I don't know what the aperture setting was, but it sure gave you ample space to capture all the lovely details of the little arachnid.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Witaj Grzesiu

Hallo Greg
Great photography. Stunning image with clear details. The spikes and fine hairs on this spider is so obvious and clear, I will be able to count them if I wanted to. How wonderful is this site to share images, compare them and learn about all the different types of a kind. What a great planet with strange beauties. Your image of the spider is worlds apart from my image of a spider I posted a while ago, but they both remain beauties. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated.
Kind regards
Anna
