Nepenthes

Today I went with Pam (Coasties) to Auckland’s Winter And Summer Gardens, a botanical garden at the Auckland Domain and Museum. It has 2 hot houses for many imported and strange plants, plus outdoor gardens and even a fernery. There were some everyday plants as well. We were quite impressed with the array of plants that were there; they even had a large variety of Eggplants / Aubergine’s, plus different chillis growing as well.

But one problem was that not many of the plants were named, so I’m struggling to find out about plants that I don’t even know the name of. But this plant I’m showing today has a name – it is a Carnivorous plant, called Nepenthes. So with a bit of help from Google, this is what I have learnet about it.

Nepenthes are tropical Picher and Carnivorous Plants. There are many different species of Pitcher Plants and they grown in many countries, mostly in the tropics.

The Nepenthese Pitcher plant captures its prey by drowning it. It digests its prey by using both enzymes and bacteria within the water of its leaves that it captures when it rains. The bacteria works with the enzymes helps break down the insects by decomposing them into mush. Sounds tasty! Then the mush sinks down into the pitcher where it is absorbed.

I know this one very well. I even captured similiar some time ago in Lodz's Palm House. Great composition with twisting stern. Well seen details on surface of plant. Very interesting capture, very well done!

Hello Janice,

This is a very good picture. As a kid I had Venus flycathcers ... you know, tease them 9 times and the cathcer will fall off. Sharp details and great composition. This is an arty picture. Well done & TFS!

Those really are some strange plants, aren't they? We have them at our Botanical Garden too, it's interesting to see decomposing flies and such in their throat.

Very nice Jancie! Love the BG colors, Very well composed with great details and sharpness. I would suggest that with a stationary subject such as this a smaller aperture would have brought the pitchers base in also...But then, that would require the use of a tripod which many times is not practical and cramps ones style! ;-)Well done!

Nature design, is always more elegant that any artificial stuff. Great game of curves to describe this beautiful predator. Could be a bit sharper. Good work.
