I was taking pictures of the black-throated sparrow who was alone on the bush when another sparrow came along to join him. The intruder was completely ignored and it seemed that blackie was trying to block him from my view. He positioned himself almost hiding the second one and began posing for the camera. This was unusual behavior - he is usually very shy. Maybe he is getting to know me.

Black Throated Sparrow

This handsome sparrow of the arid Southwest is well named. Its alternate name, "Desert Sparrow," is also apt, for despite its vivid markings, it is often difficult to detect among the rocks and scrub, especially when not moving about. However, it may be observed when it mounts a bush or rock to sing its pleasant song. The Black-throated Sparrow is well adapted to the extremes of its habitat. Studies have shown that it has a great tolerance for heat and drought. During the hot months of late summer and early fall it maintains itself on dry seeds and drinks regularly at water holes. After the rains, these sparrows scatter into small flocks and feed on vegetation and insects, from which they derive all the moisture they need. They raise their young in the dry upland desert.

5 1/4" (13 cm). Gray above, white below, with striking black throat and breast; 2 conspicuous white stripes on sides of head, 1 above and 1 below the eye. Sexes alike.

Hello Jane,

Excellent capture of this sparrow. Very beautiful composition with a great pose of the bird. Very good sharpness, light and colours. A pity that we cannot see better the second bird.

An expertly capture of a lovely sparrow on its fine perch Jane,
the low POV is very effective here and the shallow DOF blurred the leaves in the BG nicely. A fine composition indeed my friend!

I have only seen a few of these in my life...This is a perfect pose and so ....I can't find the word, but again it is that something in your view or camera or angle or surgery or something...Your images are so much clearer than a ways back...perhaps it was the camera...although they were not to be considered any less...it is the only way I can figure how to describe how good they have become..

Hello Jane
This is a superb capture....Going along with what Bob said and your reply to him.....
PP is one of the most crucial things after the original capture...once you reduce a file size for posting on the web then I have found that you need to reboost the original colours with just a touch of saturation...
Its a case of having a bit of confidence and saving a few different alternatives until you get the image as you originally captured it...Trial and Error!!
All the best
Mr T

Ps..did you get my mail?

Hello Jane,
Lovely pose and great composition make this a fine portrait of the Black-throated Sparrow. Made even better by the side-lighting. His companion is just a BG figure and the foliage in various degrees of focus adds to the composition.
A very nice image Jane and thanks for sharing it.

Ciao Jane, elegant bird in lovely pose with fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Jane,
You've captured this lovely little Sparrow in a very nice pose! In spite of the strong light you've done very well showing its beautiful markings and colours. I like the pretty Acacia? foliage surrounding the bird.

hello Jane

excellent shot of the Black Throated Sparrow, fine POV, DOF
and framing, beautiful pose of the bird, excellent sharpness
and details, and beautiful catch-loght at the eye, TFS

Hello Jane,

Nice (and unknown from me) sparrow with a lovely position. You got a great POV and did an interesting squared composition. I'm just wandering if you passed a Noise Reduction filter on the feathers of the bird because it looks a little bit modified. If it is the case, you should avoid running NR filter on the birds.

Cheers and TFS!

Hi Jane

Now this one has ambitions to be a model. How lovely to have him pose for you. The composition is lovely. Sharp and well composed as well.

Sorry, I've been so busy of late, Jane. This is undoubtedly, a scene stealer, one of the best shots I've seen in recent years.
Love the pose and acually...the entirity of this shot.
Very well done, Jane!
