Merhaba dostlarim,
Finally back in Izmir and TN my friends, I hope in a more permanent basis. I'm in a heyday, looking at all of your wonderful postings uploaded while I was away...
My present posting is about another one of the more beautiful murecid gastropods, namely a Tulip Shell, a.k.a. a Fasciolaria (Murex) trapezium, usually a denizen of moderate to shallow warm seas, its range extends from Indo-Pacific area, Philippines to India, Madagascar, SE Africa, even to the Red Sea. It is a predatory mollusc, slow and deliberate in its movements among marine algae and sandy bottoms, looking for suitable bivalves, even some gastropods to feed on. The fusiform (spindle shaped) shell is solidly built and heavy, with a sharply pointed moderate spire (the apex of my specimen is somewhat "weathered"). The highly visible suture (the line separating the consecutive whorls) is generally a little constricted, rendering the whorl shoulders with slightly pointed strong knobs more prominent. The whorls contain incised spiral lines, mainly paired. The siphonal canal (lower right) is a little extended, as almost in all murecids. Inside of the last whorl, opening to the oval aperture, exhibits very prominent incised parallel lines. A horny operculum tapering to a point towards the siphonal canal effectively closes the aperture when the animal is in a defensive mode. Usually a darkish periostracum finely covers the shell of the live animal (lacking here). The outer colour and pattern of the shell easily camouflages the mollusc in its natural habitat, but I really do not understand the function of the design covering the inside of the last whorl, no one can see those finely etched parallel lines while the animal is alive! Surely nature has an answer for this dilemma, but unfortunately I do not...
This macro-shot was taken under direct available daylight with open-shade conditions, over a dark background.

hocam merhaba,

Hi Mehmet,

I bet it feels good to be home again! It's so nice to see another of your fabulous shells. The shape, colors, designs, details are all superb. I like seeing the inside of the shell. You're reminding me of my childhood when I used to collect shells at the beach - nothing like this but I thought they were beautiful.

..and another Master of his work reappears...Thanks so much for this one..It's story is interesting and it's image is superb as always...Loving the sea as much as I do, this is always a wonderful place to visit (*your gallery). I thank you much for your kind words as regards my images. Your opinion and thoughts are always well accepted.

What a beauty, Mehmet! You make your return to TN memorable through this fantastic post of a shell that leaves me thrilled at its unique shape, coloration and presentation. The exterior is very beautiful, but what impresses me the most are those fine and very symmetrical vertical lines inside the shell.
Hindus in their rituals blow a shell of this shape, producing a range of typical sounds.
Well done and best regards.

Hello Mehmet,
Actually I like the "weathered" effect, Mehmet.
Allow me to say that if you don't know the answer to its interior design, I think nobody will know it.
Very beautiful Shell.

Hello Mehmet,
This Tulip Shell could not be displayed and presented to us on TN in a better way. The colours and technical aspects are great, as are the POV and lighting.
You pose an intrigueing question about the inside pattern of the shell that would not be seen with the live animal occupying it.
I can't answer it but suppose that it may have something to do with the growth process and a different distribution of the pigments seen along the growth lines and near the lip of the shell one can see the inside lines have been disrupted.
I don't know my friend, but you pose an interesting question and show an excellent image and I thank you for that!
Cheers,
Ivan
