An adult male Shelduck at RSPB Elmley Marshes nature reserve. The picture was taken in May when the breeding plumage is at its brightest.

Identification
Shelducks are significantly bigger and more goose-like than other ducks. They are conspicuously black and white birds, the adults looking as if a big orange band has been wrapped around their chest. Juveniles lack this orange band and have a white face and throat and more brown and white plumage.

Habitat
Breeds on estuaries, gravel pits and fields. Winters on estuaries and sandy shores.

Behaviour
Several females often co-operate by pooling their families of chicks to create 'creches'. These are attended by several females which presumably can deter predators more effectively than a female on her own.

Migration
Birds tend to arrive at their breeding areas during the late winter or early spring. After breeding most adults depart for their moulting grounds, leaving the flightless young in creches overlooked by one or two adults. Numbers of moulting birds peak at 180 000 birds in the German Waddenzee in July.

Hello Pekka,
What a gorgeous close-up of a Shelduck! They're pretty shy here and hard to get close to. Your focus is spot-on, details very sharp and the colours beatuf˙l and natural. Nice ripples on the water too.
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hi Pekka,

He's beautiful - I want one! An absolutely magnificent shot of this Shelduck. The breeding plummage is wonderful - your black, white and rust are perfect. That red beak is striking and the eye sparkles through the black face. Even the water is outstanding with the soft ripples and reflections. An excellent composition.
