Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

Family: Hesperiidae

Subfamily: Hesperiinae

Genus: Pyrgus

Pyrgus is a genus in the Skippers butterfly family, Hesperiidae, known as the Grizzled Skippers. The name 'Grizzled Skipper' best describes this genus, but in some countries the name 'Checkered Skipper' or 'Chequered Skipper' is applied to some species. Strictly speaking, 'Chequered Skippers' applies to butterflies of the genus Carterocephalus.
Amongst the Pyrgus this is a large butterfly. It is also one of the easiest to identify. It is the only Pyrgus in which the underside margins are white throughout. In other species this is incomplete as the black ground colour always extends to the wing edge in two or more places. The rest of the underside is also has characteristically marbled appearance.
It is found throughout southern and central Europe in open grassy places from low and high places. It isn't ever common in my experience but isn't hard to come across in likely looking places.

Hello Luciano,

What an excellent, sharp capture.
It looks very much like a Skipper, possibly the Safflower Skipper but I'm not 100% sure.
Lovely, textural details of its wings and with a good dof to isolate it from the b/g.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Luciano, piccola hesperidae, forse Erynnis tages, bella e ben dettagliata, spicca meravigliosamente sopra uno splendido sfondo, bravo, ciaoSilvio

hi luciano,
good to see this skipper opening fully, well captured in good lighting and with details. background is colorful and contrasing too. tfs.

Hi Luciano
I like tight crop and great field guide POV. Also great OOF background. There are little overexposures on white spots - maybe you could do a little higlights reduction. Sharpness is pretty good

Hello Luciano,
A wonderful capture of this skipper that I think is Obethr's Skipper (Pyrgus armoricanus). The brighter white marks in the middle of the hindwing help to ID it. Excellent sharpness and composition among the yellow flowers.
TFS this fine image of a species that is very rare in Sweden,
Have a good weekend,

Excelentes colores y contrastes. Quiz algo subida de luz pero aceptable sin duda. Veo que esa flor tambin es comn all; como es de las ltimas que aparecen te queda en el recuerdo luego todo el invierno jajaja.

Hello Luciano,

You did a very good close-up of this butterfly. The image is so sharp that the texture of the wings cen be easily observed as well as the pattern. Light has been well sued so that colors are very well shown.

Thank you for sharing,

Bonjour Luciano,

Salve Luciano,
I like this picture with the skipper a lot. You got the flower really back into the background, only the butterfly commands our attention. And it is technically well presented.
My best regards to you,

Merhaba Luciano,ok gzel bir kare.Kelebekte ok hoş,desenleri, netkiği ve duruşu ile hoş bir fotoğraf, ellerine sağlık :)
