Last week I was in a tropical garden where I made this photo.
I‘m not an expert in butterflies, but 'lets give it a try' between all my bird pictures.

Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing clade; its wings are translucent. Its most common English name is glasswing, and its Spanish name is "espejitos", which means "little mirrors."

Indeed, the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass, as it lacks the coloured scales found in other butterflies. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which is found in the Amazon Rainforest (South America) The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. Its wingspan is between 5.5 and 6 cm.

Adults range from Mexico through Panama and inhabit the rainforest understory and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers. G. oto prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum. The red and purple striped caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females.

G. oto adults also exhibit a number of interesting behaviors, such as long migrations and lekking among males.

Merhaba Peter,
Bu ne kadar güzel bir kelebek karesi. Renkler artalan, üzerinde durduğu yaprak, hepsi enfes. Çok güzel bir çalışma. Eline sağlık.

Hello Peter,

This is a very fine photo of this beautifull butterfly. The colors of the leaf beneath the insect and the background are so fine matching perfectly with the insect. You have found such a good way to render the transparebcy of the wings and the orange colors seem to have a light of it's own.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Peter, fantastic butterfly, I never see before, thanks, great colors, fine details and excellent sharpness, splendid blurry BG, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Peter,

Hi Peter,
They are AMAZING creatures! I'm very impressed every time I see this specie. I'm sure that the fabricants of windsurf sails were inspired by this specie! This is a beautiful composition with great sharpness and exposure. I'm amazed that you could get this clarity at this shutter speed. Well done!
Claudine

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter

This is a very beautiful macro of this type of butterfly that i always wanted to see :)
We don't have any tropical gardens here and therefore i think i have to go to Hungary to have a chance for seeing one. But, on the other hand, if i have such great shots from people like you, i might not need to :)

Excellent side POV here and great exposure parameters, allowing the viewers to see well through those galls wings of this species.
The colors are also lovely and the bokeh you managed for the BG is quite gorgeous, too.
An excellent note on top and you have a terrific pose here!

Bravo and TFS

Lovely picture of the butterfly. Was it trying to attack that insect in some way? I am not aware that butterflies have the ability to do so.

Hello Peter

Great close-up of this butterfly, fine POV,
superbly focused, great sharpness and details, TFS
