[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is my second posting of the same specimen, a shell of Dye Murex, Trunculariopsis (Murex) trunculus, from a slightly different aspect under different illumination. It was not my intention to post twice the same shell, but since Dr. Bayram Gocmen's posting of the same species a week ago, which he had kindly dedicated to me, mysteriously wanished from the pages of TN, I reversed my intent.
The Dye Murex can be frequently seen on the muddy-rocky and/or algae covered intertidal-subtidal zones of the Mediterranean - Aegean system. The hypobranchial gland (a gland situated under the gills) of this mollusc secretes a mucoid liquid which may produce yellow, green, blue, red or the famous "royal purple" colours of the ancient Mediterranean peoples, according to the method used.
Here, I would like to demonstrate the beautiful surface sculpturings of the shell, especially those on the body (last) whorl, and with this aim, used a single naked spot on the right to produce a strong side illumination. Besides the fine sculpturings, the slightly constricted sutures between the whorls are also visible, together with small, obtusely pointed knobs on the whorl shoulders. The low spire ending in a little eroded sharp apex, the large smooth walled and slightly oval aperture narrowing towards the not so long siphonal canal in lower left and the strong "tooth" on the edge of the outer lip (lower right) which is effectively used by the living gastropod for opening and keeping open the shells of small prey bivalves can also be seen.
The 7 cm long shell was collected from a sandy - pebbly bottom at a depth of 5 meters while snorkelling, offshore of Limanreis, Outer Bay of Izmir. For photography, a dark BG was chosen.

Hi Mehmet,

Another wonderful view of this Dye Murex. I must be learning from you because I recognized both the shell and the name from the thumbprint. The lighting is wonderful showing off every detail of the shell. The shades of pink look beautiful against the black background. I can't understand why Bayram's dedication to you was removed.

Hi Mehmet,

another extremely sharp picture of an shell named Dye Murex.
Exellent details, don't think that I have ever seen these shell in real.

Another gorgeous shot Mehmet... :)

Lighting and detail superbly done and beautifully positioned against the black background. TFS

Hi Hoca,
Yes My last posting on a murex shell which I dedicated to you disappeared from my gallery without any explanation on this from TN. I also wrote on this to Adam (moderator) but I could not yet any reply my message yet. When I return to Turkey I will upload it again at the same style...
Hoping not deleteing again:(. Sorry for this problem.
This one is great as usual. TFS.
Greetings from Cyprus,

Merhaba Mehmet,

Not sure what happened...but not withstanding the problems which I feel some can address to management...this is another and actually quite well done image for your growing and educational collection. You are the master of this in your field...and your almost side affect knowledge of photography is amazing...I can see plainly why Bayram appreciates not only your works and studies but your artistic talent as well!

perfect portrait, TFS Ori

Hi Mehmet
I am rarely commenting or critiquing studio shots on TN. Of course it would be difficult to show all this beautiful molluscs in nature. I must say that I was always interested in marine molluscs and I like shells very much - especially Cypraeidae and Muricidae. All your photos in TN gallery are very nice - It is a great guide to sea shells with great details and very good notes
Very best wishes from Poland

Hola My dear Friend.
As usual in Your fine work, another great image to Your excellent portafolio of shells.
all of them with top quality in photography.
Very interesting notes too. I am happy to see all of them and learn about this wonderful world of living animals in sea.

Mehmet hocam merhabalar...

Hello Mehmet
You do have some wonderful shells on your site here at TN.
You show them all well, and you make me want to go out and start looking for some more shells to photograph off our beaches now. Maybe I will start again this summer.
Do you clean them up to photograph or leave them as you find them?
Looking closely at them shows us their intricate beauty.
Thank you for enthusing me to go out shell-hunting
