Hi All,
One from a couple of years ago as I'm just getting over the flu or something intestinal. This capture of a family of Red-necked Grebes was made at Spruce Coulee dam in the Cypress Hills. We were out canoeing and they were out for a swim. Now to catch up on critiques.

Red-necked Grebe
Podiceps grisegena

General Description

By Andrew Slater

The Red-necked Grebe breeds over all of Alberta except for the southern prairies and part of the Rocky Mountains. It passes the winter months on both coasts of Canada and the northern United States. On many sloughs in the parkland belt, it is the most common diving bird.

This grebe arrives on Alberta sloughs early in April, and has departed by early November. There are one or two winter records from the Bow River.

It dives for small fish, aquatic invertebrates and amphibians. Crusataceans and vegetable matter floating on the surface are sometimes taken as well.

The nest of the Red-necked Grebe is a floating platform of vegetable matter. It is usually attached to submerged plants.

You betcha' You betcha' We should all wish for this seasonal shot...but I am adrift down here S of the 49th...and wondering what will come...I feel something in the air..can you also feel it.I think it is a spiritual thing..perhaps beyond that which we can fully know...and after looking and responding to Wolfy's image..I think you folks up there have an idea...I am watching closely....and BTW kin I call ye' on land line since I have it free via MgickJack?

Hi Rick,
you don't know but this photo has captured my imagination and heart all at once as I really love seeing these birds and the best thing is you have a family of them.It is so cool that the young have those Zebra stripes as most Grebes do and this photo shows that detail very well. The colour is also spot on the money as I should know having many dozens of photos of them.I also like the green hue that the water has and overall it is a fine photo indeed. The only thing that could make it better is if the young were riding on the parents backs. Thanks for sharing these beautiful birds with us all.Have you had as of yet the good fortune to see a Clark's Grebe as for me it is the only one I have yet to photo.

Hello Rick,
A great family portrait of the Red-necked Grebe taken from a nice low POV with excellent sharpness and lighting. Can't be easy to take such a shot from a canoe, even if it is a good way of getting closer!
Thanks for taking this delight from your archives. Get well soon!
