Hello my Friends!
Today another rather "fresh" picture, taken just few days ago during a bat trip with my colleagues :)

This is Natterer's bat Myotis nattereri (Kuhl, 1817) (Vespertilionidae) (in Polish: nocek Natterera), one of 10 species belonging to this genus known from Poland.

Here are some basic facts about this species:

Distribution: Europe, N Africa and Near East

Habitat: mainly forests and parks, overwintering in caves and cave-like environments

Size: head and body about 45cm, wingspan up to 30cm

Life-span: up to 25 years

Food: different insect species, especially large flies, also spiders (it can collect insect from leaves and tree bark too)

Echolocation: between 23-115 kHz

Conservation status: Least Concern

Etymology: named after German naturalist Johann Natterer

Please feel free to watch also my other Chiroptera pictures here :>

And last but not least, I would like to dedicate this picture to bat specialist and lover from Turkey - Ahmet (rousettus) :>

Thank you in advance for your time! :>

I haev quickly put this into my them of Trek Nature Classics. It is a one of a lifetime shot Ahmet. You were so gracious to share it. On the other hand I would be in a real hurry to show others if this were my shot...that is not a very long lens...Bat Attack! Tres cool..

Hi Radomir!

Your picture is impressive. First, a bat is always a strange look, it's somehow frightening although we know that there's nothing to fear. Second I imagine how difficult it must be to realize this picture of a flying bat. Congratulations, it's also technically perfect

Kind regards

Hello Radomir,
This is a wicked shot of the bat in flight.
It beats me how people can even capture these things.
They are so fast and you don't see them coming until the last moment.
Lighting is great and the details are very good too.
Very nice work.

Hello Radomir,

Nice shot of this bat. Very good composition. Excellent focus and exposure. Good natural colours. I am afraid that your link of the Chiroptera does not work.

hello Radomir,
Congratulations to have made this shot of a flying bat. This kind of picture are for sure not easy to make! Very cute round bat (in fact I'm afraid that they might fly in the hairs)...excellent sharpness and adequate dark background.
Thanks and best regards

Hi Rado,no comment, just right on my prefered pics, this is fantastic work and top level of difficult, ready to the National Geographic Magazine,my best best compliments,Luciano

Hi Radomir,
an incredible image!!
How on earth did you capture a bat in flight?!?! :-))
Very good sharpness.
Superb composition.
I like the close-in dynamic crop.
Slightly dark so I did a WS to brighten it up a bit.

Very well done!!

Hello Radomir, my dear friend
I am very sorry for my delay to such a wonderful post and dedication. I was busy along this week and away from TN mostly. Now, I see it delayed and I am very glad to this deciation. many thanks, my friend, for this dedication. Possibly, this is third shot of Natterer's bat on TN, but it is the best one, with great focus, POV, dark BG and frame.
Some characteristics of the species are visible nicely, such as long calcar and fringled edge of uropatagium (tail membrane) and the attachment point of plagiopatagium (wing membrane) to toes, as you know, important for identification of Myotis species.
Also your notes are very informative and nice as always. Thanks for sharing this beauty and one of my loves. best wishes

Hello Radomir,
A fantastic capture of a Natterer's Bat in flight, the result of skillful timing, great use of flash and patience.
The POV shows the features with fine sharpness, which makes this a superb illustration of the species and a fine tribute to our friend Ahmet.
TFS this delight and greetings from a cold Scania that we came back to covered in snow!:(

Hi Radomir.
Unbelievable in-flight shot of an amazing animal. Considering shooting conditions it is simply fantastic. Superb sharpness and great DOF. Dark key execution of the scene is very impressive, Title is great and exact. Perfect job. Bravo. It is actual godsend for any photographer. Bravo.

Hi Radomir, again,

...you shot it in flight, in the dark !!! For me this is the ultimate challenge for any wildlife photographer. My respect, Radomir. By doing so, you provide a picture that I never saw before (would have liked it for teaching), one where you actually can study the particular flight mechanics. The front edge of the wing is drawn down, the wing has a curved profile like an airplane. The hind legs provide the tension. Absolutely great and rare, this picture! Good dedication too.

Best regards

Isn't it odd, in the seventies some were making "bad trips" and now, you go at "bat trips" ;-) (a silly joke from me). And I just love this picture, the bat is sharp and to see it flying and straight in the face like this is amazing. Great shot Radomir, fantastic,
