[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A Turnstone guarding a grab it has been eating. The Sanderlings were very interested in the same prey. Actually this picture was taken just few meters from the Sanderling I posted yesterday. The picture was taken at the sea shore outside of RSPB Titchwell nature reserve.

From Birdguides:

Turnstone (Arenaria interpres)

In: Ruddy Turnstone Ca: Remena-rocs Da: Stenvender De: Steinwälzer Es: Vuelvepiedras común Fi: karikukko Fr: Tournepierre à collier It: Voltapietre Nl: Steenloper No: Steinvender Pt: Rola-do-mar Sv: Roskarl US: Ruddy Turnstone Ru: Камнешарка

Identification
In winter plumage Turnstones are mostly dark brown on the head and upperparts and there is a distinctive curving black blob extending down either side of the breast. This contrasts distinctively with the pure white belly. In summer plumage the head becomes splendidly black and white, rich red-brown and black colours appear in the mantle.

Habitat
Breeds around rocky coasts. Winters on rocky shores and shingle beaches.

Behaviour
Their habit of walking busily along, deftly flicking over pebbles in search of food has given them their regular name and also the nickname of 'Brickflicker'.

Migration
Birds pass through western Europe 'en route' to their wintering areas along tropical and sub-tropical coasts in Africa. The birds which stay in Britain in winter are mostly from Canada and Greenland. Some birds can be found in wintering areas during the summer months. These are usually sub-adults which do not breed until they are 3-6 years old.

Hi Pekka,
Wonderful shot of this great looking bird and you have captured a superb moment here. Very impressive sharpness and you have handled the natural lighting pretty well. Excellent DOF, POV and composition.
TFS.

Hello Pekka,

You have captured the beautiful plummage well. I can imagine that, in strong sunlight, those white breast feathers could create a problem.
It is interesting to see it with its food source.
A well composed shot, positioning the bird nicely off-centre.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
