Hi All,
Well this is the last in the Owl series I have been posting and I had to go way back for this one. These young Burrowing Owls round out the six species of owls that I have photographed in the S.E. corner of Alberta where I live. I'm not sure if you all get as excited as I do when I can add a species to my portfolio, but also sometimes its nice to go back and look at the list you have acquired so this is my reason for my last six postings. I truly hope you didn't get bored, but by your great response to the first five I am very happy. Thanks to all that have looked in.
Rick

Burrowing Owl
Athene cunicularia
>

General Description

By Nora Bryan

This endangered owl is just "hanging on" on the northern limits of its range in southeastern Alberta. These small owls wing south for winter, as far as Texas or Mexico, and possibly farther.

The Burrowing Owl is a specialist of the open plains. Flat stretches of lightly grazed short grass prairie, undisturbed by human activity and unpolluted by pesticide residue are necessary for this gregarious owl's success. It can be spotted in daylight standing on a mound near its nest entrance or on a fence post as it prepares for an evening hunt.

In the daytime, these long-legged owls run about the nest site snatching up insects such as grasshoppers and dung beetles that abound in the short grass prairie. At night, the adults take to wing, cruising silently for mice and voles.

The burrowing owl doesn't actually dig out it's own burrow but rather nests in abandoned ground squirrel or badger burrows. A bit of refurbishment is done by a pair -- digging dirt and flinging it out of the burrow with their feet. The nest is fashioned from a bit of dried vegetation or some dried cattle manure at the end of the burrow. Six to ten white eggs are laid. The owlets can protect themselves in the burrow by making alarm calls that sound like a riled up rattlesnake. At about six weeks old, the young owls are fledged.

Hello Rick
They are so cute and adorable and noticeable and big eyed and beautiful and, and, and, and I would love to have one. Such a lovely capture. Not one, but five pairs of hypnotizing eyes looking back at you, and I am sure the mom is also peeping at you from somewhere. You lucky man! Just what I needed to see today. I like it very much.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rick,

You deserve an award for this amazing shot of this Burrowing Owl family. Your magic worked again - how did you get all five to look right into the camera? Those ten yellow eyes are fantastic. Excellent details of the faces and plummage. The one in the front even seems to be smiling at you! Lovely setting and composition. A magnificent family portrait.

i think you already post this:
http://www.treknature.com/viewphotos.php?l=3&p=93062
but the second version is much better: colors are better, framing is better, details are better

that fact that you receive more comments on a much worse picture tell us that this site is going down. i think they are less people active now then 2 years ago.

Hello Rick.

Excellent image, nice composition and colors.

Regards.
