Hello my Friends!
Last time I presented a species of cave cricket so today a small continuation with Orthoptera insect - a real Goliath in the insect world - Saga pedo (Pallas, 1771) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) (in Polish: niezdarka dziewica) .

This is a female, the only sex known in this species. As a result of lack of males, this species can not mate and copulate, the only way to "produce" eggs is parthenogenesis.

Distribution: Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Habitat: open, grassy areas

Body size: 45-80 mm + ovipositor 25-35mm

Activity of adults: July-August

Food: different small insects and another arthropods

Conservation status: Vulnerable (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species)

Thank you in advance for your time and visit!!! :>

Hallo Radomir
This insect has the shape of some kind of spaceship from a Sci-Fi movie. The details captured is stunning and displayed with such preciseness. Every detail is sharp and clear. Lovely composition and background. A professional photo, excellent in sharpness and focus. Colours is wonderfully captured and displayed. Worth a A+ for this interesting looking creature. I like it very much.
Best regards.

Merhaba Radomir,
You've captured a perfect close up of this (obligatory) female Saga individual from a lateral aspect in a sunny day, with fine natural colouration and great structural detail. This huge tettigonid lives also in my country and can draw blood from a finger with a single bite, I know that from personal experience! TFS this fine image my friend.

Hello Radomir,
Fantastic capture of this interesting and enormous parthenogenic species of cricket. I like the way we can see a little of the environment in the BG!
The POV, technical qualities and lighting are excellent so that we really see a fine view of this fascinating species that must be an evoltionary dead end, as genetic mixtures are impossible and it is therefore entirely dependent on a stable environment if it cannot mutate. But perhaps it can(?).
Darwin would have been interested in this one!
And so am I! Thanks for sharing this: I look forward to meeting you in the summer!
Best wishes,

Czesc Radziu

Czesc Radek!

Jakbym byl Aborygenem, to bym ja upiekl i zjadl :-)

Hi Radek

Nice to see you again here, my friend! I hope you are well!
This is another very interesting and beautiful presentation from you. I had no idea that they are parthenogenetic...however, if some frog populations present parthenogenesis, it's clearly to understand how something less evolved can present it, too. I only hope this phenomenon won't extend to humans, too...it would be a bad situations for us males :)))
Excellent macro here, my friend, with this big Saga pedo.
The details on your subject are spot-on and very sharp while the DOF is equally terrific.
Well done!

Bravo and TFS

Grand picture of a mythic insect! Hope to see one one day, but even that is a challenge! The rock background is a good idea, as, more often than not, Saga is photographed against the shrubby BG which is its habitat.

Hello Radomir,

here you perfectly give a combined picture of the grasshooper and also of its interesting environment.
In spite of the bright light, all parts of the picture are well exposed.
The insect is presented with high sharpness, in addition.

Best wishes, Peter

Hello Radomir, excellent close-up of this Saga which we observed it in Odemis, Izmir while we was searching herptiles. It looks like a monster:).
TFS and regards,

This looks great Radomir.
What a huge beast.
It is very similar to our Giant Weta, except that ours are not often green.
Also, most of our Weta are nocturnal in habit.
It is strange to see one in open daylight like this.
Great post.
(I'll try and find that cave weta for you this evening)

Excellent lesson here for me and I am sure for many. You are quite the expert in this field both in the insects as well as the photography...Notes are superior!

Hi Radek,
Nice to see you after a little interval:) an outstanding macro capture of this huge grasshoper with superb clarity and sharpness. DOF an POV are excellent.
TFS and cheers from Izmir,

HI Radomir,
this guy looks gigantic - must be 2 meters long - as it looks so!
You captured it so wonderful, I like your low POV. Sunny colours, a blue sky, it's perfect, thanks
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Ciao Radomir, this is a wonderful monster, great macro with fantastic details and splendid colors, perfect focus and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

nice-sharp pic, nice wide angle, TFS Ori

Saga pedo is a fascinating insect. Because it's so big. Because it's so rare. Because it's so different to grasshopers: nocturnal, carnivorous and parthenogenic. Lukky find.
Excellent shot, very detailed.
Rare animal on TN.

Hello Radomir,
excellent capture of this species of cricket. Good POV and light,
TFS Ferran

Hi Radomir.
Fantastic shot. Bravo. It is clear reproduction of all details and features of a cute cricket are outstanding. However, surroundings are terrific too. Amazing scene at whole and superb DOF selection. My congratulations on so rare on subject and quality work.

Hi Radomir

Lovely close-up. Really good detail, lighting and pose.

Hi Radomir,

beautiful, sensational, exciting picture of this Mediterranean wonder.
In the same region (on the road to Albania along the lake) I found S. natoliae in 2006, and posted a picture of it on TN (one of my first ones) while it feigned an attack on me. If you don't become an instant entomology-fan by just meeting a living a "Sägeschrecke" I don't know what does. Thanks for sharing your great discovery with us TN spectators.

Best regards

Hi Radek,
A nice capture of this beautiful cave cricket. A nice educative note on Parthenogenesis. Sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

hello Radomir.
beautiful picture
great sharpness
good details

i seen males in greece of this spiecie.

is this a subspiecie?do you now the name?

Sorry to miss this one for long time, actually been off TN for a while. The capture is amazing and the powerful sun light is handled very well, but have to note that it reads how strange it feels from the appearence: I am not a rock dweller!

Zdravo Radomire

ovaj skakavac stvarno izgleda moćno, sviđa mi se i igra sa sjenom :)

Pozdrav, Dario

Nice shot. The inclusion of the bg works perfectly here. Also charming colours and excellent details.
