I spent my weekend in Sovata which is a resort, in Gurghiu mountains, renowned for the heliothermal lake.

As weather was not very good, sky was cloudy and temperatures slightly under 0 C, I made a walk around Ursu lake. Most of the lake was covered by ice. Only a small part was not frozen. A flock of Mallards ( Anas platyrhynchos) was feeding on the free water. As birds were not frightened by my presence I took some photos. One of the males just came at the surface after diving in the shallow water. He was shaking off the water from the plumage.

Ursu lake (46,000 sq.m.) is quite special. It is the biggest European heliothermal lake. It was formed in 1875 when salt from the ground collapsed and landslides have blocked up two small rivers. Lake is about 18 meters deep and has salty water covered at the surface by a fresh water layer. The concentration of salt varies with the depth and is between 40 and 250 g/liter.

Due to the fresh water layer from the surface heliothermal phenomena occurs. Under sun radiation the salty water is heated more than the outside temperature. Therefore in summer, in the surface layer, temperature is between 19-20 C while at 1 meter deep it is 30-40 C and at 1.5 meters deep it is 40-60 C. Under this depth water temperature is between 21-26 C and constant all year long.

Hi Cristian.
You have caught a very cute scene. I like timing a lot and crisp sharp images of the ducks. Brownish colour palette is very attractive too and framing and POV of the picture also are very good. TFS and best wishes.
Alexei.

Good focus, sharpness and details.

hi Cristian

Wonderful timed moment to capture this straight up pose of the male to make him the star of the group here. The scattered pattern of the group is interesting to show the other ones are bored.
