Here's another shot of an Avocet from Elmley Marsh. This one was a bit further away than the others but allowed me to frame the shot with it's reflection included :-)

Stilts and avocets (Recurvirostridae)

Overview
A distinctively-patterned black and white wader with a long up-curved beak. It is the emblem of the RSPB and symbolises the bird protection movement in the UK more than any other species. Its return in the 1940s and subsequent increase in numbers represents one of the most successful conservation and protection projects.

Where to see them
Coastal lagoons on the east coast in summer and the Exe estuary in winter.

When to see them
Along the east coast of England in summer and in the South-West in winter.

What they eat
Aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans and worms.

Hello Joe,
Yes, it is very nice! I like the upright pose and the beautiful light. Fine details, lovely colours and a nice reflection in the water. I like the central framing here too.

Composition is bit tight here and yes adding the reflection is great idea. Its difficult one because the water should be still to get perfect reflection and here the wind had spoiled a bit. Good to see the species, very beautiful one. tfs.

avocet is one of my favourite wader birds. But I cant capture such a great shot. yours is great with focus, POV, composition and of course reflection. vertical cropped, exposure and colors also great. thanks for sharing, best wishes

Hi Joe,
this is an attractive photo of the Avocet with a typical point of view for the capture,as most shorebirds stand to their sides for a better view of us.The details are good and at iso 800 none the less!Seeing that your shutter speed was so high at the time you could of used a lower iso to get the shutter speed down to say 1/500 as that would give finer detail.I have read that the best speed for most lenses is 1/focal length if doable that is as for the slowest to shoot with.A good shot with a minor amount of over exposure in some white areas.Thanks for sharing this black and white coloured avocet,the ones we have here where I live are a peachy/brown colour otherwise very similar. I suspect you know why I have been absent...Fine image Joey...I saw one more of this variety today somewhere...my days are now a blur...but I can tell you this...in order to get a good image like this one needs to have only one thing...ABSENCE of snow:-)

That is quite the beak on this avocet.
Excellent sharp focus and detail.
The reflection is a nice accent.
Very good light and colours.
A well composed shot.it may sound crazy but the expression of the bird seems relaxed with an almost smiling eye I call it.
