Actually, it was a totally unexpected encounter next to a parking lot. With dark clouds of thunderstorm approaching, we were heading to our car after visiting an exhibition of Tibetian culture at the old Carinthian mining village of Hüttenberg. Taking the shortest way, we crossed a high growing meadow full with Geranium blossoms. There I noticed a few dark brown butterflies drinking nectar unaffected from the approaching rain, a species that I was sure to have never seen before.

Aricia eumedon is distributed from Mongolia, Altai, Tienshan to Turkey, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In a few isolated colonies the species is reaching Italy, southern France and Spain.

Coloured dark brown in both sexes, the Geranium Argus may be seen flying in one generation from June into August in extensively cultivated meadows both humid and dry, as long as they are rich with the caterpillar’s feeding plant which may either be Geranium palustre, Geranium pratense or - in dry places – Geranium sanguineum. Caterpillars live in symbiosis with ants.

The feeding plant is also offering the butterfly’s preferred source of nectar, as shown here.

In Austria, as in most parts of Central Europe, the species is confined to a few isolated spots and considered to be severly threatened by extinction from loss of habitat.

Hello Peter,
Nice to see that we are neighbours!
Great closed-wing macro of A. eumedon on the flower of its larval host plant. The POV and composition on the flower are superb and the general technical qualities including the fine DOF are first class.
Nice to see this: I haven't been able to photograph this species for some years now though it is widespread in Sweden.
Thanks and best wishes,
Ivan

Hello Peter
greats the vivid colors of the composition. The butterfly is perfectly in focusing with geranium on a background much neutral that very puts in prominence the depth of the photo. Optimal contrast and clear details.
Happy new year

Just beautiful, Peter. : )
Super sharp details and perfect exposure.
I like the POV and the pose of the butterfly.
The pastel colors of bloom and butterfly are lovely.
TFS, my friend, and Happy Holidays!

Enhorabuena por tan bella composición. Mucha profundidad de campo. Naturalidad en los colores. Encuadre algo cerrado, aunque ello solamente sea mi gusto personal.
Un saludo: Josep Ignasi.

Hallo Peter
Your image stole my heart. There are plenty of personal favourable details that I like when I look at an image. Firstly my favourite colour is present in this image, and you spoil my eyes with two shades of purple namely lavender petals and deep violet anthers of the flower. Further the unopened as well as semi opened blossoms of a flower is something that always attracts my attention. It just gives such meaning and a total different perspective to a photograph containing flowers, and even the dullest flower livens in front of my eyes if I see that aspect. I cannot leave without a comment on your favourite subject – butterflies. Your Geranium Argus is no exception and I can only say Bravo to detail, focus, sharpness, neatness, clarity, composition and all else I did not mention. This is definite one of my favourites, and I thank you kindly for sharing.
Best regards
Anna

Hello Peter,
This is a splendid macro of this lovely butterfly on a Geranium flower. It is only found in one place down here where there's plenty of G. sanguineum and this reminds me we haven't been there for a couple of years!
Must go there in the summer, I love Geranium flowers so much too! The colours of the flower and the butterfly look so natural and wonderful here and details are very sharp. This is a real feast for the eyes!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Lieber Peter,
Anne

Hi dear Peter.
I do not know what shot is better original one or WS. Both give a complete idea about this fine butterfly and so amazing flower. Your DOF selection is terrific. All details of the flower and its visitor are reproduced and represented fantastically. POV and composition of the shots are blameless. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.
P.S. I am very pleased with your heartfelt comments. They are so dear for me.
