Eristalis tenax - Drone Fly

The adult of Eristalis tenax (common name: Drone fly) in appearance bears a close resemblance to a honeybee. The larva has a long thin tail which it uses to breathe when under water. Thus it is called a rat-tailed larva. It lives in stagnant water, farmyard drains, etc and sometimes carrion. A female drone fly can lay 100 to 200 eggs (sometimes even more). It takes about 15 days until the larvae pupate. The adult hatches after another 10-15 days.

This Drone fly was feeding on what I believe is Hogweed which was growing alongside the footpath. These are tall plants (3-4 feet) and the sap causes inflamation to the skin if contact is made, especially on warm sunny days.

Hi Andy, very nice. Very good use of DOF to get all the flower-head in focus. The genus is correct here but I wonder about the species. I think it may be E. interruptus but would need to see a little more to be sure of it. Very well done.

Great shot Andy,
Excellent detail, colours, sharpness and DOF.
Well composed and exposed.
